Not enough info here to really say that it was anything specific. I agree that your sites probably were not deindexed to begin with.
 
Well I'm convinced. If it happens one time in an isolated case with tons of external complicating factors it must be true. OP has solved SEO, case closed.
 
I was just poking fun around google's new update. Fact is i see most of top10 sites are either ads free or has google ads on them.
 
I see VERY unrelated results for some niche keyphrase searches, google still seems to be dancing around.
