I love living in a 3rd world shithole.

In Europe, the police are fairly tame, and in rural areas leave you alone altogether.

I'm in a city in southern England, and the police are pretty dozy, kinda wish they had more vim. I had my car broken into a few years ago, and by the time the police turned up to take my statement, they were feeling really sorry for themselves. I was treated to half an hour of blow by blow details of what a horrible day they had had (which just sounded mundane and boring really), and at the end of it I was like, "there, there, have a cup of tea". When they departed, I thought, that report is going to get filed and never see the light of day again. And so it was.

P.S. For another example of just how dozy they are, take a look at this

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...oh-Co-op-shoplifter-plundered-bottle-ros.html

Someone pinched a bottle of wine during the Olympic torch relay, and it was left to teh shop staff to chase it, the police were too busy "guarding the torch". Honestly I'm dreading the Olympics, we're going to make right idiots of ourselves with the whole world watching.

Sounds a lot like the police where I live. The local police chief and his crew spend most of their time selling real estate. He came by our house the other day to talk to my wife about a nearby property. After they were done talking about it she asked him if there was much crime in the area. The police chief said not much, in fact there hasn't been anyone locked up in the local jail since the beginning of the year. She asked if that was because there is no crime or because the police are not doing their job. He just laughed.

Flash back to the US where I used to live and weekly reports of SWAT teams raiding houses and shooting pets and grumpy old people in their search for a baggie of weed.

^^^

I can top that for doziness. How about the following story from 2003:

BBC NEWS | UK | Blunkett 'concerned' by Windsor stunt

A "comedy terrorist" dressed in a pink ballgown and an Osama bin Laden beard and turban, scaled the wall of Windsor Castle, actually talked to police who helpfully let him in, and then walked up to Prince William, who was having his 21st party, and gave him a kiss.

Then again, our whole government is dozy. The latest news is that our current Prime Minister spends all his time playing Fruit Ninja on his iPad, and it got so bad, the civil service complained about him.

lulz. I remember seeing a video once of some nut who was able to sneak into a meeting of the Parliament (what do you call that place, House of Commons? not sure) and when "security" was called a bunch of old guys carrying swords started chasing him, stumbling all over themselves.

Yeah, pretty dozy.

^^ Oh yes, that was the one where some protest group got into the House of Commons during Prime Ministers Question Time, and then threw a condom full of purple cornflour at Tony Blair (and it hit him too and he had a purple splatted suit).

Most Americans, including many on this forum, actually don't understand that their experience with their "government" is exceptionally unique in the world.

^I don't see a lot of evidence of how bad they were before the drug wars. I can't blame the cops themselves, the root of this evil is clearly in the government, not the cops... And you only need to look at the history of Prohibition here to see it all clearly.

I mean fuck, if we can't get the citizenry here to see that banning weed does so much harm with perfect examples like Prohibition in their required school reading, then no wonder they'd vote for Obomba. They'd vote in a turnip if faux news told them it was the only "electable" candidate.

^ That's not really fair. After all, they were flying Canandian flags, and everyone knows Canadians are friendly and generally harmless.

just fucking wow about police raid to houses about weed, is it even legal for them ? I seen in films they need order from court for that, no ? and weed is illegal ?

Yes, just some possession of weed here can put you in prison. Not usually with small amounts but they'll use it as an excuse to get black people behind bars if they like. ;)

Yeah, true enough. Just look at how we do road rage even:

Have a scrap, then shake hands. :)

Sorry, but I don't have as much pity for poor people as I used to, especially in developing countries where the economy is booming. Know loads of people who complain they're poor, and if they don't want to make something of themselves, that's up to them, but they have all the exact same tools & resources available to them as I do. There's no reason they can't. I don't even have a high-school diploma, and I've managed to do just fine for myself.

I tend to agree with you. I moved to where I am now a few years ago with what I carried in suitcases. Average income around $800 per month so not the poorest palce in the world.

I was living on about $4 per day and was up to over $300 per day within 3 years. Can anyone do it? No, but some do much better than me. For sure though, givne that I use resources available to anyone here then I do not have much sympathy with those who even gently infer that I got what I got because I was 'foreign' or had some advantage conferred by my place of birth.

There is a lot of negativity and aggression in cities, especially third world. I grew up in Mumbai and was angry and paranoid all the time. You can't escape the filth, traffic, pollution and stupid people no matter what in a third world city.

I moved to Gangtok last month and it's nice out here. Relaxing and peaceful. I am not saying that it's perfect (it's a small town after all), but it beats a third world shit city any day. This is about as cheap as the far suburbs of Bangkok, but great fresh air and the climate is cooler as well. A higher quality of life too, it doesn't really feel third world. Northeast India has several such towns. Clean, livable and still very cheap. Gangtok is probably the most developed. My only gripe is that there are no hookers here.

Gangtok? Wow, that's pretty close to Mt. Everest... Can you see it?

What's your altitude up there?

You say it's cheap, but in a hot, uber-crowded country with the largest population on the planet, how can that nice, cool, spacious land be cheap??

No but I saw it on the plane from Delhi to Guwahati (connection to Bagdogra, the closest airport)

There are great views of Kanchenjunga (third highest mountain) from all over the town. Altitude is about 5000ft. Just walking around here is good exercise, it's all uphill.

It's still not a major tourist destination. The state of Sikkim doesn't have an airport or train station yet. I made a monthly deal with a motel to let me stay for about $550. A spacious apartment can be had for less than $200/mo. But I personally can't be bothered with shit like doing chores and making bed etc. Non locals (even if Indian citizen) can not buy land, houses or apartment legally.
