I just left an 80 cent tip...

Did you miss this part, ly2?

I'm trying to wrap my head around this dumb idea that I should feel obligated to pay the driver a tip. Why doesn't pizza hut (and all delivery places) just increase the delivery charge?

How is this backstepping?

Sure, I don't mind the 18% mandatory gratuity fee. Restaurants can charge whatever they want, IMO. Tipping, on the other hand, is supposed to be a voluntary "tip" for great service. These days, the sentiment is that tipping is mandatory. If it's mandatory, it should be built into the bill somehow.

PS Thanks for being one of the few rational people in this thread. Nobody else seems capable of discussing this without hurling personal insults, or just labeling one as a cheapskate.

I tip $2 on carry-out / $7 on delivery. When it comes to people who handle your food, it's better to be loved than feared. Good luck bros.

The drivers who fuck with somebody's food because of low tipping are worse than the low tippers themselves. If you don't want to deal with "cheap bastards" then don't deliver pizza!

This opinion does not remove bodily fluids from cheese and slices of pepperoni. Enjoy your DNA Lover pizza cheapo!

I was a regional manager at Pizza Pizza after college and everything mentioned in this thread regarding cheapos are true.

In addition:

*Cheap people complain more, which drives up the cost of doing business with them for store owners.

*If you're ordering from a franchise, then the franchise is taking your order, passing that order on to the store and charging them at least $1.50 for phone orders, while Internet orders cost $2 and up (this is in addition to royalties and raw materials.)

*If you're a punk who frequently complains to get free shit....Guess who pays for it? The little guy (store owner) who then passes the cost on to their drivers, by not paying them anything for in-town orders (often times making them pay out-of-pocket for complaints.)

Tip the driver a fucking dollar and rest assured that whether they like you or not, they probably won't lump you into the "semen in your cheese" category.

If you order from a non-franchise shop there is a good chance the driver is getting the entire delivery charge shown on your receipt, but that's all they get.

Cheap people are in the minority though, if they weren't, then pizza delivery wouldn't present any sort of profit to anyone. That's also why it is so easy for a driver to remember you (cheapo-baller.) And, come the first of the month, your tax money finds its way to the driver anyway because those on government assistance tip also. :D

I left an 80 cent tip for a Hooters waitress once. She was ugly so I felt she hadn't quite performed her professiona duties.

So basically people would...
Rather have the store automatically add the cost into the food price, such that you have no control over how much the service person gets, as opposed to the store not adding the cost in, and you getting to pay based on the quality of the service?

Seems pretty stupid to get all huffed up over a tiny matter of principle, when if you look at it through a pragmatic perspective it actually is better for you.

You must have been reading the post by the smartass above who is happy to pay a mandatory tip at high-end establishments (regardless of service level) but then turns a blind eye to the "peasant" who pays gas and insurance for his job.

Lets look at it this way:

Many high-end waiters, bellhops, strippers, etc -- can easily make 100k per year (based on what they know they'll make in tips.) By saying you all would only tip these types means you believe the rich should get richer...and the poor should stay where the hell they are. Right?

Hope everyone is as ballin' as they claim to be. Karma is a bitch.

while at ASE 09 I was in a local pizza joint late at night with barman, ngo, and a few others and he left no tip at all for his slice of pizza.

true story bro.

They should give their drivers an equivalent of whatever they consider to be a "fair tip" (ie the one they are reminding me to give the driver on the checkout page), and add it onto the price of a pizza. Which part don't you understand? It's a pretty simple concept, but I can elaborate if you'd like.

And you want people to speak to you with respect? If you want the pizza company/driver to pass on the real costs associated with delivering pizza to you then expect to pay a LOT more for your pizza. It's a pretty simple concept, but I can elaborate more if you like.

However, since you've just admitted that you're supposedly prepared to pay more why not just pay more by tipping if the service was good? That way you maintain control of the situation. I don't think this has anything to do with it though. You're really just a cheap asshole.

Exactly, where's the incentive to provide top notch service if you remove tipping from the equation and just pay more for the food in the first place? The tipping culture in North America means that the service is superior to other places in the world where tipping is unheard of.

delivery charge is meant to cover gas. When i used to deliver for an italian restaurant i worked at we paid for the gas and were reimbursed with the delivery charge. Although delivery charge would usually only be .75 to a 1.25 per order
