I Am Legend - review

I'm goin' to see it tomorrow night.

I believe it's about Will Smith being the only man left on earth somehow, and animals evolve into like 1/2 animal 1/2 human or something like that, and he fights them off. That's what I got from the previews at least.

Saw this last night...all I have to say is don't see it in a movie theater that is near a ghetto. Too many damn people yelling dumb shit, babies crying, and cell phones going off. Who the hell brings an infant to a 10:20pm showing of a scary movie? Dumbasses...

Movie was a great though...

I agree that the book was great, but the other attempts at making a movie have not really lived up to the book (The Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price and The Omega Man with Charlton Heston are both based on I Am Legend.) Will Smith doesn't exactly inspire me -- he's great when he's Will Smith (eg. Six Degrees of Separation) but most of the time he can't quit being The Fresh Prince. I Am Legend starring The Fresh Prince would just make me want to vomit.

The previews looked very "28 Days Later"'ish... I'll have to see it just because of that, and also because I want to see what they made NYC look like as a fairly empty place.

It was very much lik 28 days later in a sense. The outdoor scenes with NYC are badass. One is in Times Square and it looks great. Also, apparently in the year 2009 a Batman/Superman movie is coming out according to the posters outside.

oh talking about 28,

that has got to be one of the most underated movies of this year.

28 weeks rater was fucking awesome. Those zombies just got me off right, they ran after the meat. I mean those bitches hustled to get some barbecue.
Amen.

Get the dvd if you havent. :D

At times it feels slow going, due to a lack of music, but I think it's just suppose to highlight how much it sucks to be alone.

I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't classify it as action. Very similar to 28 days/weeks later.

I got to the movie late so i had to sit front row in front of a huge screen, so I couldn't really enjoy it properly.

Great movie, more enjoyable that I thought. Actually the no music added more realism and suspense.

Actually couldn't finish my Nacho w/cheese because munching them down was alot louder then the movie ! Had these asian babes next to me who were covering their faces the whole time Big Will's character ran after Sam [German Shepard] into the dark building [creatures hive] , Priceless ;)

* Small note * Zombies in 28 weeks later, were alot more scary [got my heart pumping] then these CGI Night/Dark Seekers .

Hope when the DVD comes out there will be the alternate ending they cut and re-shot. And more background info as to why Dr. Robert Neville felt entrusted to find a cure at all at Ground Zero?

God damn. All of your review skillz suck.

Ok, here it is:

I Am Legend, based on the short novel by Richard Matheson, peers into the last months in the life of the last human. Robert Neville -- over acted by Wil Smith -- rages at the entire world as the scientist cum soldier who is responsible for finding a cure. While diverging from the original story in virtually every way possible, the film version is
-- somehow -- even less watchable than old people fucking.

If you filmed old people fucking while someone READ the original version out loud, the entertainment value of this film would be literally tripled.

Visually, dramatically, sensorily and even smellorily this film sucks. There is nothing about it worth the $8 ticket price. There is no story, there is no character, there is no drama, there is no suspense, there is nothing in this tragedy worth watching.

Wil Smith's performance as a doctor slash soldier is flat, unbelievable and not interesting. He is smarmy, weak and predictable. The dog, "Sam" is slightly more watchable than Smith, simply because it's lines, "woof! woof!" are delivered with more feeling.

The "creatures" are ridiculous parodyie of something scary. The only "frightening" moments are created by camera tricks and flash bulbs that wouldn't fool a 12 year old into believing anything scary was happening.

The only truly emotionally engaging parts of this vomit fest are played light and loose by actors and director, forcing the audience to laugh where real thought should prevail. One moment of this film (SPOILER AHEAD!!!!!)

SPOILER
SPOILER
SPOILER

Where Robert Neville (Wil Smith) shoots a manequin (which is the only "human" contact he has) because it has been moved and he can not understand why, should be a truly poignant moment but is rendered ridiculous by the ham fisted direction and the childish, almost salivish, adherence to the formula of hollywood that dictates that "funny equals acceptable". This scene is ruined by the funny factor.

In short, the 120ish minutes of film includes only about 3 minutes of actual entertainment. None of which appear in the original material.

Had the director read, or at least tried to honor, the original material, a true classic could have resulted. The unfortunate end result of this effort was a Wil Smith fest and a complete raping of the intent of the original concept which was be careful what you wish for, because you might get it.

The film actually delivers: be careful what you wish for, fuck you.

Mkay?

kkthxbubyenow.

Well...I think everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I know for a fact (being a filmmaker) that opinions on what is good/bad vary a great deal from person to person.

Personally, I really liked it. I only had a brief recollection of the story that this was based on, so I didn't have any real pre-concieved ideas going into it.

I agree that having Will Smith play a scientist is a bit of a Hollywood stretch, but overall, the film delivered more than I expected. I wish the "creatures" would not have been totally CG, but other than that, it was a great piece of Hollywood Movie Magic...GO SEE IT!!!! :)

Anyone seen it who has seen at least one of the other versions? I'd be interested in a comparison.
