Saw it and kinda liked it. Didn't love it, though. I'd give it a 6/10
(almost a 5, but it's the holidays and the movie had its moments).
Will Smith can be strong with the right roles and he was "okay"
here. I've never read the book, but have to imagine it was far
more entertaining than the movie. Makes me appreciate the
screenwriters like Paul Haggis and Steve Zaillian.
As for the directing, I'd give him a 4/10. He has some strong shots,
but missed way too many opportunities. I'm not familiar with the guy
(a quickcheck on IMDB explains why), but I'd have to hear a ton of
good stuff about his next film to pony up the $10. Too many "boo!"
moments, each one knocking another chip of credibility off the
director.
Special effects were both great and laughable. The shots of NY
were done really well. The shots of the city's other inhabitants were
bad.
The music wasn't memorable. These days, few composers are
putting good stuff out. Williams, of course, is still great. But, even
Zimmer just calls it in these days.
Overall, I would recommend it for guys who love action or thrillers
(though I wouldn't throw this flick in either genre).
One last thing: is it me or can Will Smith not create any on-screen
chemistry with his own kids?!
