My SEO heroes are John Chow, for actively buying and selling links, cloning his site when it got deindexed and basically telling Google to suck it, and Shoemoney for realizing (and helping me realize) that the goal of an online business should not be ranking #1 in google but making money, so once he stopped worrying about SERPs and started focusing on profitability, his business model, and ROI he found the reduced organic traffic just eliminated a waste of bandwidth that didn't convert.
