I'm sure many of you have read about this, but for those who haven't it is well worth the time.

From Wikipedia about Woodman Labs (GoPro is a subsidiary):

The company was formed by Nick Woodman. Woodman said he was inspired to start the company following a 2002 Australia surfing trip in which he was hoping to capture quality action photos of his surfing, but could not because amateur photographers could not get close enough, or obtain quality equipment at accessible prices. His desire for a camera system that could capture the professional angles inspired the 'GoPro' name.

Woodman initially raised money for his company by selling bead and shell belts out of his VW van. Each belt sold for under $20. While making the belts he came upon the idea of providing a fashionable strap to attach a camera. At the time most straps were rubber wrist straps that were awkward, painful or easily broken.

In 2004 the company sold its first camera system—a 35 mm film version.
The cameras evolved, going from 35mm to digital, where it started recording 10 second clips, to 3 Megapixel digital cameras to its current configuration of having fixed lens cameras with a wide 170 degree angle in high definition 1080p cinema quality video. Two cameras can be connected to create 3D video.

The cameras have branched out from the surf crowd to be used by auto racing, skiing and bicycling as new adapters are created.

The parent company includes financing by several venture capital companies including Steamboat Ventures (affiliated with the Walt Disney Corporation), Riverwood Capital, Sageview Capital, Walden International, and U.S. Venture Partners.

On March 30, 2011, it acquired CineForm. In particular the acquisition brought the CineForm 444 Codec into its control. The codec (which was used in the film Slumdog Millionaire) according to the press release "makes HD and 3D editing faster and more convenient without sacrificing image quality." It was used to roll out the 3D HERO® System shortly after the acquisition.

About a month and a half ago Foxconn bought an 8.88% stake in the company for $200 million USD valuing Woodman's holdings at over $1 billion USD minimum. He is 36 years old.

This guy was a visual arts major at UC San Diego. He hustled sea shell belts in Cali and took out a $35,000 loan to start what is now GoPro. 10 years later he is a billionaire.

tldr: surfer bum started GoPro ten years ago with puka shell bullshit and a 35k loan, now he's got billions yo!

Do work bros.

Thank you Jesus. Would you like a dinner roll?

Never thought them to have that much value. A few years back or so they were in Entreprenuer. They run huge displays in Target, don't see that many people with those GoPros though. A few, but not enough to think 8 percent is $200 Million USD. That's pretty sweet. Wonder how long he has to stay on before he realizes those numbers though. It looks good in the magazines and press of course, but that's for the people to gobble up the product and hype the value for the bigger fish in the pond. Still great for him and those on his team. Plenty of opportunity out there for people with vision.

And thank you again for another excellent ebook opportunity.

You won't see them often unless you are part of the target market, but the target market is huge. I see at least 20 or so every time I go snowboarding (breck, vail, copper, etc) and if you go to any open track days for auto racing it's not uncommon for somewhere around 1/3 of the cars to have them. It really is a cool product. I'll upload some of my videos when I'm on my desktop tomorrow.

Yeah they're really common here in the few ski hills in vancouver. I even saw an old guy once sporting one. You know these cameras are big when grandpa is sporting one.

Down in Louisiana I haven't seen many.

I went snowboarding a month ago (Utah) and it seemed like every 15yr old had one on top of his helmet or on a metal stick. Probably saw 50+ in 2 days on the mountain.

Too bad their two latest firmwares have bricked about 50% of their cameras. Just bricked mine last night after purchasing the WIFI pac. Their support sucks as well.

GoPro is actually one of my favorite business models in the world.

It is a well designed piece of high-margin hardware supported by one of the most beautiful examples of a viral growth engine on the modern internet. They rode youtube's backbone straight to the top, while providing INSANELY HIGH VALUE by allowing people to create truly compelling and visually stunning content.
They make COOL SHIT happen in the REAL WORLD and on THE INTERNET.

I knew that it was going to be a billion dollar company when it was a 25 million dollar company.

Why didn't I think of that.

A+

Love the GoPro! Use them when ever I go boarding or riding of any kind. Personally one of the best clips I've seen with it was on youtube for "Grinding the Crack"...sends chills down my spine. check it out

Gopro is pretty cool and I have one but it could be much better. The battery life sucks, the wifi module battery sucks, the non-intuitive interface on the gopro and wifi remote suck, and they finally came out with the android/ios apps not long ago which doesn't suck. The optics and video are pretty good for such a tiny device.

I like the cool things you can do with it, this year I put in the corner of the house and did a timelapse putting putting up the xmas tree. First day with it I put it on a remote control car zoom around the neighborhood. I really like to get one of those helicopters for it.

The story behind the whole business is amazing.

I want to start a niche with this where I bang hot girls while I wear it ontop of my head.

oh wai...

It's great that we now get all these awesome shots of sports and the like...but don't foget that it also brings us stuff like this:
