Google Content Retargeting is Annoying the Shit out of Me

Number of times I've ever clicked on a retargeting ad and bought a product... = 0.

Hah. They're crazy effective. They're awesome in competitive commodity industries like hosting, etc, where you're in a constant battle for mindshare and are forgotten in 10 secs because every host looks the same.

All you guys are gonna remember storm, liquidweb, etc for good reasons or bad. Lots of consumers will be seeing those and not giving a shit too, they'll just be subconsciously reminded, and when they need a web host, "storm" will come to the front of their mind, even if they don't remember seeing tens of ads everywhere, or actually know why.

There is a limit though, apparently 5-15 ads every 30 days is about the sweet spot in terms of being remembered by people, but not being too in their face that you piss them off. Lots of agencies/companies get carried away though, and just bid ridiculous CPC's without view caps.

Yea, i have to clear my history pretty often and log out of my gmail acct to make sure my results are somewhat normal

^^^^ Let's stop being hypocritical already. Nobody likes repetitive ads and most marketeers just put up with ads with the sole purpose of comparing or stealing creatives.

as others mentioned, just clear your cookies on a regular. don't bother opting out of any companies targeting because that is also cookie based and next time you clean out your cookies you will just wipe out the opt out cookie and be retargeted again.

also, many networks are working on a last view model so they can still get a post view conversion regardless of if you clicked on the ad or not. Ctr is a barely looked at metric these days.

it can get even worse though, I work at a company that does data prospecting for ad targeting and we analyze browsing patterns of converting customers and start targeting ads to others with the same browsing patterns because they will be more likely to convert because they have a high match to current converters. you can get targeted the fuck out of something that you don't even know you want yet until you see the ad. sounds like bs but it is highly effective.
