Geez, what a strange 18 years it has been for my Internet.

From like 1996 until 2009 I was stuck with 56k dial up at the house since I didn't want to fool with shoddy sat. Internet and had no way to get cable or DSL.

The month DSL finally came to my road, I had put my house on the market and moved closer into town.

In the new house, I got setup to get cable only to find I was 1 pole away from the line and the cable company wanted me to pay out like $9k to dig a line to my house. No way. I settled for the only DSL I could get at the new house ( 2MB down and 1MB up ).

From 2009 until today, I have had to share the slow DSL with my kids and all their Youtube/Minecraft and other BS stuff... but today I finally get DSL that's 20MB down ( fastest in my area ).

Yeah, not a big deal to most of you guys. However, I have been waiting for something faster it seems like forever and I can finally find out whats so big about Hulu and Netflix and even getting online to play xBox online.

Sometimes you need to be grateful for what you have and what you can get.

I had a good lol from that

2009 you were still on a 56k? Where the hell do you live bro? Even in Africa most countries had DSL or cable by 2009.

About an hour away from any major city, in a remote place dominated by only the local phone company. Too far away from the nearest node for the copper lines to bring in DSL

Damn bro :|

Damn you must be living in the sticks. Oh well, enjoy your new high speed Internet!

I was, I moved closer to the city ( but not in it ) just to have things like better Internet and got let down again by cable.

What kind of speeds are most of you getting ( and let me know if cable/fiber, etc )

i assume you really mean mbit not MB? cos 2MB/s isnt too shoddy

Had Verizon FiOS - 75/75mbps
Moved out to the country, have cable - 60/2mbps

The biggest difference is the upload speed. God I miss my FiOS 75mbps uploads.

I actually just moved myself. Went up 20 floors, apparently AT&T only services the first 2/3rds of the building, so was getting 25MB.

MFW now Penthouse levels I got 75MB...

But I can do that cause I just got promoted to the fries division at Burger King... #WeMadeIt

(technically AT&T 'can' service the top level, but their system does not 'recognize' there is another 1/3rd of the condo building. In their world or rather system, only 2/3rds of the building exist... Fucking clowns).

Love the attitude. It's so nice to hear from grateful people.

Congratulations on your new high speed Internet. You deserve it. :)

lol - I had FREE ADSL broadband in (I think it must have been 1995). It varied between 1 - 4mbps. Basically I moved to a specific part of North London just to get on the trials! : facepalm :

(I was on the BT Trials in the UK)

Almost everyone else in the country online was using a dialup modem and I had 24/7 fast connection. You can imagine how many different servers I set up in that time lol.

I remember when I had 56k in like 2001

The children... they don't even know what an image loading on 56k looks like.

For those of us who are old enough to remember the internet when it was young, those images stir some nostalgia.
