It is a sales tactic plain and simple. Bernie Maddoff was an incredible salesman. My fund is private and exclusive I only accept celebrities and presidents and exclusive friends bla bla bla. People go crazy when they hear this and he ended up getting a few 100 billion. If it was private how did he have 1 of the biggest funds on earth? Good salesmanship and lies. Nothing private about neither they accept anybody and everybody. It is a great sales tactic to get more customers lusting after your product or service.
