Re: the oxidation issue, I got a spray can of "Shaver Saver" lubricant when I used cheap disposables and found it increased their lifespan by roughly 3-4 shaves/~2 weeks. I don't think I'd use it on my new Merkur with safety blades since they are so damned cheap and I don't want buildup but definitely worth investigating if you use an electric or anything. The thin layer of lubricant basically blocks contact with air and thus prevents oxidation.
Oh, and as we've seen from the discussion around the salt water, moisture in the air can be enough to do it--you don't even need to actively use it and wet it. Leaving a razor in the open air in a bathroom that gets very humid due to lack of proper ventilation can go bad just sitting there.
