So I just had an interesting 30 minutes. I go out to check the mail and there's a group of kids all gathered around a lumber pile. I went over to see what they were messing with, thinking it was a small helpless animal, but no... it was a black widow spider.

It just so happens that one of my friends is studying Arachnology and was just talking to me last night about how she needs to find a live black widow today, because she needs it for some experiment and can't use live ones from the lab. So I thought I'd be a good friend, go get a jar, and catch it for her. In the meantime I tell the kids to leave it alone.

I come back a few minutes later with a jar and the kids are all off with some lady freaking out. Apparently one of the dumbass kids thought it would be cool to let a fucking black widow spider crawl on his hand. Of course he got bit and he ran to his mom.

Short story: They killed the spider and I put it in the jar so they could take it to the E.R. with them.

Kids. lulz.

/back to work

That kid's going to be sick as fuck for a little while.

He let it crawl on his hand?! I turn into a little girl when I see a spider.

Seriously. I had a jar and a three foot long stick ready to catch it. There's no way I would even come close to letting that thing near my hand. Apparently he thought it was "too small to bite", lol.

Yep, thats fucking kids for you. I would have been pissed, yo homie needed that fucking thing and they just killed it because the kids a dumbass; heres hoping he took someone with him. :)

Shudders

Im still trying to figure out what body part that is in pic above, wtf..

We get alot of them here, called Red Backs in Australia. I have them around the outside of the house, they like pot plants and small cracks in brickwork. I leave them alone, Im not one to kill something for the sake of it just because it poses a threat. If you leave them alone, they leave you alone. Then again living in Australia, the red-back is a small threat compared to some other spiders and snakes.

If I remember right from the blog post I got it from, it's a fat thigh.

Heh we always make fun of my kid cause he runs away from butterflies (ok not butterflies but dragonflies, almost same thing) but in this case I would be glad for it.

Subigo, think you can find out how it went for the kid and report back?

An acquaintance of mine who lives in Florida got bitten by a brown recluse spider. Not only did she need to have quite a bit of flesh removed from her leg around the bite locale due to gangrene, but was mostly incapacitated for a couple of months because of the lingering systemic illness. nasty business that.

i was bit once by a Black Widow, the only thing that happened to me is it got pretty swollen and i was sick for a couple of days, it sucked but nothing really deadly, i guess.

Yeah, I'll let you know what I find out. I just saw the kids outside again and their friend (the one who got bit) is still at the hospital.
