Do you guys believe in ghosts / demons / possessions / haunted homes?

I have heard whole short of horrible stories from different peoples here in India but I have never ever experienced a single incident in my life. Yeah one incident happen with my sister in childhood where she was kind of disturbed and nervous for about a month and complaints to my parents about getting her consciousness distracted in some streets.

It was horrible for me to face her that time and I used to be out of home most of the times and then my dad taken her to a Muslim saint to get it treated religiously.

Please could you point to some sources on how quantum physics provides evidence for ghosts? Or maybe explain a bit more in your own words if not?

Disclaimer: just posting this to play devil's advocate and because several people have mentioned quantum mechanics and ghosts without actually providing content or even a link. I believe it's all a bunch of BS, twisting reason and creating rationalizations to create a so-called "science" of ghosts. There's still nothing but theories, and poorly thought out ones. But here you go:

Mythology would tell us that ghosts are the lingering spirits of the dead. Balderdash! Ghosts are not at all the spirits of the dead. They are not, in fact, “spirits” at all. A ghost is, put simply, an impression upon the subatomic weave of the universe, created via strong emotion of a sentient observer.

This means, in other words, that ghosts are not the disembodied personalities of the dead, and, in fact, they can be “spirits” of the living! To understand this phenomena, one must first grasp one of the most fundamental principles of quantum mechanics: observation changes the subject being observed. The simple act of observing or measuring a particle forces it into an energy state. Unobserved, a particle may take any energy state available to it, but when a sentient observer is introduced, the particle becomes locked.

Ghosts are created when the observer’s emotions create a semi-permanent “indentation” into the quantum tapestry of the universe. Like the scent of burned toast that remains long after the offending bread is discarded, ghosts are impressions of emotions that remain long after the cause has been resolved. Ghosts, therefore, are formed not from the dead, but from the living and their interactions with the world around them. The recording of events within the subatomic weave gives rise to an afterimage, and depending on the intensity of the emotion and the permeability of the quantum state, different “types” of ghosts can be created.

Quantum physics does not provide evidence for ghosts yet but it suggests the possibility of existences of beings which operate at different levels of consciousness. (We cant usually see or feel them with human senses but they exist at a consciousness level and sometimes some humans get the ability to see such beings) Read this book for detailed analysis - [ame=http://www.amazon.com/The-Tao-Physics-Exploration-Parallels/dp/1590308352]The Tao of Physics: An Exploration of the Parallels between Modern Physics and Eastern Mysticism[/ame] (Book written by the renowned scientist Fritjof Capra).

It is perfectly normal for a perfectly normal girl (even a hot one) to be scared of ghosts. Because all girls are scared of Ghosts.

I have heard a lot of people say that know someone who have seen a ghosts, and I also know a couple who have seen some strange stuff. In high school, we used to wake up late nights, go to haunted places. Mostly I came across only cats, foxes, gush of wind, etc, mostly cats .

One of my friends, who was perfectly normal and pretty brave too. He saw a ghost. Then being the brave one he picked up a brick and threw at him, and the ghost ducked according to him. And then he passed out. He was never the same afterwards. Left school. I was in a Boarding school :-)

Also in the same school (the locals say that this was a tribal burial ground long time ago, but during the construction of some building, all they found were animal bones) but in a particular location where a new building came up, the construction laborers say that they see ghosts at night, when we were in vacations. Apparently the ghosts don't appear when there were lots of students in the campus, but again I didn't see any. We went to the place lat at night.. little scared, little excited. lol

The only paranormal activity that I came across close to me was when one my cousins went crazy. Like a ghost took her over, like in exorcist.

She was a really shy kid, but all of a sudden she would become a different person and become extroverted. And then she started speaking a strange language.

We took her to all sorts of psychiatrists and was under medication. Could never cure her. Her mom also took her to exorcists and all shit, and we found out that the language she was speaking was some tribal dialect. She had never come across any such tribals, but she once went to a school camping/picnic to a place where these tribes live, or once used to live, I forgot.

She got cured as sudden as she got it. Her mom said it was some exorcists. lol
me and my dad still talk about it and we both are still between believing the whole shit and thinking her whole family is nuts.

PPS; But remember that most ghosts stories are made up. I have made up my own share of ghost stories to scare hot girls. Not the above story though..

I never used to believe in ghosts or paranormal activity until I had a first hand experience.

Please indulge me for just a moment and let me give you a bit of back story...

My lover and I were on our way back to our apartment after a night at the movies. We took a shortcut down a dark alley, and what happened next is the worst thing that's ever happened to me. It's still hard to think about it, let alone type it to a bunch of phaggots on the internet, even after more than twenty years later it feels like yesterday...

My lover was killed by a mugger.

Right there in front of me... Out of nowhere...

It really puts into perspective how fragile life is.

Anyways, this hit me really hard, as you could imagine. The love of my life, one moment walking hand in hand and the next moment.. Well... my lover was gone.

It took me a long time to come to terms with what happened, and I still struggle with it daily. I tried a lot of things just to get through each day. I even started visiting a psychic. It was through this psychic that my lover would communicate with me. Well, that's what the psychic said, anyways...

I never used to believe in that crap. Psychics? Yea, okay, cool story bro. More like scam artist, right? But this psychic... This psychic knew things. There's no way they could have known some of the details they knew unless they were actually communicating with my sweetie, and I'll stand by that statement until the day I die.

Anyways, yeah, there's my Ghost story...

Sometimes when I'm at pottery class, I swear I can still feel my lover there next to me...

Wow. Sorry for your loss..

But I almost said cool staarry after reading the last two lines.. until I realized it was Patrick Swayze and not Demi Moore who died.

From what I can tell Capra's reasoning was based on a model which was shown to be incorrect and has not been in use for decades. It has been heavily criticized by other physicists. I would have to read his book to see more but his theories so far look unconvincing to me. Regardless, I imagine it is not that difficult to take a part of physics and make it look like an explanation for something highly emotional for the average person 'in the street'. Quantum physics has the ultimate ring to it: it is so ethereal and counter intuitive that who knows what it can do. I bet someone could use quantum to reason the existence of God. Oh wait, didn't someone already use it to explain those zero point arthritis bracelets?

Asking "do you believe in ghosts" is a lot like asking "do you believe in god". The answer often comes from the following thought process:

1. There are things we don't understand that provoke a large emotional reaction in us.
2. Science can't explain them.
3. Therefore it must be god/ghosts
4. ????
5. Profit by selling people products associated with this idea... all the way from the Bible to Capra.

Most only get to point 3. But then we can't all be gay webmaster marketers.

I admit that I think it would take an exceptional person who had a frightening experience to remain true to reasoning, so I can understand how they end up believing it must be ghosts. I do not know how I would react, but I hope I would not jump to conclusions based on myth, folklore and emotion. That is not science and that approach has not got us where we are today.

One last point: all this god/ghosts stuff also reflects the enormous arrogance of man. We are a pathetically small speck which has existed for a minuscule fraction of time in this universe, yet we think that it's all about us, that there is a soul, that we somehow live on in spirit - defying thermodynamics and conservation of energy (immeasurably stronger than Capra's theories) - it is so, so self centered it makes me physically wince. But that's humanity.

I think it's the opposite bro: it's people who do not believe in anything at all besides themselves and science that are the arrogant ones. How can you think that there is nothing above you out there?

I do believe in spirits because I've experienced a few things myself, and I know many people or all backgrounds that have experienced similar shit. No, science cannot explain everyting and No, we are not alone in this universe, and we are definitely not the center of it.
