Disaster Preparedness: Are you ready?

Ha!, Its funny, I thought about this the other day when I read about the Florida zombie guy..I was like what would I have if hell broke loose, right then...what would I have to work with... Luckily I hunt and camp a lot, so some things carry over.

I have a lot of useful stuff in storage, not on this list...But this is what I have right now...if it all went down today.....

1. LifeSaver Water Purifier - Its for camping, but it would be useful during another hurricane or Zombie attack.

Screenshot2012-06-04at104133PM.png

photo3-1.jpg

The LIFESAVER bottle is the World's first water bottle to remove all bacteria, viruses, cysts, parasites, fungi and all other microbiological waterborne pathogens without the aid of any foul tasting chemicals like iodine which is now banned substance within the EU. LIFESAVER complies with all British, US and European Drinking Water Regulations for Microbiological Reduction as tested and certified by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

Note: A lot of people don't know this, if water is ever shut off in your house....you have about 2 days worth of drinkable water in you hot water heater. If its zombieland, and you are no where near any fresh water...you can ransack homes for the water in their water heaters. I would probably still use a purifier like the one I have to be extra safe though. (especially if time has passed..but like I said, it is completely drinkable as is)

2.Mathews Solo Cam MQ1 Compound Bow

This is my baby, its got about $1000.00 put into it. Its good to know how to hunt for food, incase of the collapse of society. Incase of a zombie apocalypse you can't beat a high powered, silent killer...with reusable ammo.

3.Bushmaster Survival [/B]KnifeBushmaster Survival Knife

This is a survival knife, its pretty bad ass...and pretty large. It came with a lot of little survival things, some cool, some more novelty that I replaced with my own stuff. A good knife would be ideal for any emergency...especially this one in a zombie apacalpyse...because its fucking gigantic =D

So you can see its size

4.Gamo Silent Cat Air RifleGamo Silent Cat Air Rifle

This is a pretty bad ass Pellet gun, would be great for hunting small game or self defense...and you can easily carry a ridiculous amount of ammo with you that is really light.

Its surprisingly quiet for how powerful it is and even though it is a pellet gun, it is a powerful one that you would NOT want to get hit with. Mostly though, it would be good to kill a few birds, squirrels, rabbits etc if you needed food.

5. Hiking/Climbing Hydration Backpack
This is a light back back, with a hydro bladder in it so that I can bring water along with me when I'm hiking or climbing. Inside of it I have a lot of little goodies that would be good to have in case of an emergency....this pack isn't large..but would be good anytime you needed to scout out. If you had to venture out and go hunting or scavenge, it would allow you to carry what you need, and not only BRING water with you....if you were out and FOUND water and needed to bring it back...this would let you.

photo7.jpg

Other Items Inside:
Handwarmers
Fishing Hooks and line
Emergency Thermal Blankets
Lighter
Water proof Matches
Fire starting kits
Mirror
Couple Bags of M.R.E's for emergency food
Gloves
Multivitamins

6.U.S. Air Force Survival Handbook

512H1cTMGzL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA300_SH20_OU01_.jpg

I've had this for awhile, and I always keep it in my bag when I go camping or hunting as a small failsafe. A lot of people in the military agree that the U.S. Air Force Survival handbook is one of the best ones out an it has some really good information in it, with a lot of details. Like the back says, it has...

"First aid for illness and injury, finding your way without a map, building a fire, finding food and water, using ropes and tying knots, mountain survival, concealment techniques, signaling for help, survival at sea, building shelters, animal tracking, predicting the weather and much more".

...and it does. Its really a great book to use for reference or learning new things.

7.Paracord Bracelets Paracord Bracelets

Nothing special, but its always good to have a bunch of these..you never know when you will need rope.

8. Hand Pump Flashlight

photo1.jpg

This is good for anything, whether camping or your power goes out...or any other time because as long as it isn't broke...you'll have light. All you do is pump it, and that pumping action provides the power to light the flashlight.

9. Collapsable Shovel, Saw

photo-1.jpg

Nothing special here, self explanatory. Something that is always in my bag.

10. Multi-Tool

MultiTool.jpg

This is a must have, it gives you a lot of things on one tool. Knife, saw, bottle opener, philip's and flat head screw driver, pliers, wire cutter etc.

11. Wolverine Claws

photo6.jpg

photo4.jpg

This has no real world application...but it is bad ass. This would really only have possible use in a self defense situation, or a zombie apocalypse but when talking about this scenario, I have to include it =D

So how about ya'll, what do you guys have on you if shit hit the fan?

Man, are you serious ?!

I don't know why you need 20 guns, but agree that preparing for more than a few days is a good idea. I have rice stored in 5 liter PETE water bottles with dry ice CO2 purge, seems to work very well. All that dehydrated food and MRE crap mentioned by some posters is a pretty poor source of food but I guess if you have minimal space and weight budget you can't do much else.

I stick to two primary calibers, 9mm/223. But I do have a 50 caliber, 3006, 45, 22, 357, 40 and could go on. Although I only need one thigh strap and one rifle, having more guns with the same caliber or make/model allows you to have more parts. Also a lot of my shit is buried in Mylar bags in PVC burial tubes in random caches within a mile of my mountain home.

just buy canned beans. got all the nutrition you need minus maybe a couple vitamins. get those from pills. doesnt taste fancy but do you honestly believe that survival meals taste anything like youd like something to taste? and theres a couple kinds of beans to choose from so you can eat something different with every meal!

i dont prepare for these silly scenarios, but if i had to, id buy a couple cans of red/white/green beans. the green ones are not nutrition superstars tho.

Why spend $1 used for a can of beans when you can spend $2-3 and get a whole bag that would last 30 years and have 5x the amount if stored correctly?

That's what I am fuckin talk 'bout there!
Now I am sure there is nothing new that you need to know.. but talkin is good SOOOOOOO...

Have you thought about gun caches? The ol' rifle in a PVC pipe buried in the backyard idea.. list of gps locations with food caches buried..

You know the first thing they will do is take everyone's guns ..

Already done, see above. However I don't rely on gps for my caches.

I always keep enough food and water around. I have no ammo. nor any guns. however, i am confident that when push comes to shove, ill end up with guns and ammo aplenty.

Get guns.. Because with my guns I can take your supplies, remember that. After 3-5 days, people will lose their fucking minds and do anything and everything to get what they need

If zombie is a metaphor for mobs of desperate people trying to get your stuff then ok. But if you're worried about undead people then you need to stop watching so many brain eating movies and you won't be worried about brain eating zombies.

Obviously defending from zombie hordes is not meant to be taken literally. I was just showing what I had in my house if I HAD to survive some apocalyptic scenario, including a fictional zombie one.

Like I said, I have this shit for hunting, camping etc. Except for the wolverine claws...I just saw that on amazon and wasn't very expensive and I said fuck it lol.

one word: photovoltaic

I will just stay put comfy in my house while you monkeys go running around campfires.

That depends on whats happening, and how long it happens. How much food that doesn't depend on electricity and your refrigerator do you have? How much water when the water goes? Where you going to get food that the rest of your neighborhood isn't trying to get it?

I live in Texas and I've been through two major Hurricaines....the last one, IKE, depending on where you lived, shit was shut down completely for anywhere between 2 weeks to a month.

I've been in a "comfortable house" when shit hits the fan, and let me tell you....that "comfortable house" gets real uncomfortable when there is no electricity (so no TV, no computer, no fridge, etc) No A.C. or heater (So either hot as fuck or cold as fuck, depending on when it happens) and the food you DO have...there isn't good ways to prepare it. (No oven, no microwave, etc)

So if you think your going to be comfortable there, you're crazy...I've been through it, and it sucks....unless you've prepared for it and have generators, MRE's and shit like that.

Don't forget a lockpicking tool set. Everything you need to survive is out there. You just have to unlock it. :) When you know how to pick locks, the whole world opens up to you. :)

If you're concerned about unlawful detention during such an emergency, take the Urban Escape and Evasion course here:

onPoint Tactical LLC - Legendary Skills for Today's Professional

You'll learn how to escape handcuffs, rope, zip ties, and telephone line (most common restraint for home invasions).

The last day is a training exercise where they handcuff you in the back of a windowless serial killer van with other classmates and put hoods over your heads. Then they drop you off at some unknown location. You escape and they try to hunt you down. Most awesome experience ever!

A lock pick set is actually a good idea, I used to have a set a long time ago. I could pick some simple pin tumblers....but that shit is harder that it looks. Then again, I was young and impatient when I tried. I should get some more and go through some refreshers.

I have cash and guns. All that other shit seems pretty unnecessary considering I can get my hands on anything else I might need when the time comes...

I think knowing how to fight and defend yourself really well would be a highly desirable skill to have. That's probably the one area I'd focus on if I had more free time.

If you had cash, guns, and lethal hands I mean shit, what else do you need?

Depending on the situation, cash may be worthless. Guns are always great. Im not sure what you mean by "I can get my hands on anything else I need when the time comes". Do you mean you are going to use your guns to go steal from people? Kill them?

If so, thats exactly why people have THEIR guns....to kill you when you come get it. What about for minor disasters...ones where you know society will be there afterwards. Are you really going to go murder people for food?

I agree with learning how to fight. Jiu-Jitsu has been amazing in my life. Its great for your health, stress levels and fitness...but is also really good to know how to handle your self in unarmed combat. Most people are oblivious to what a real fight is like and they overestimate their own abilities.

Some think if they are larger than a person they will automatically win, or if their muscles are bigger. Some think if a person "looks mean" then they automatically CAN fight. Tattoos do not win fights.

When you fight everyday, against people of all shapes, sizes and skill sets...you learn not to ever size anyone up. And you also learn, that there is a significant difference between someone trained to fight...and has dedicated years of his life learning how to fight...compared to someone who has never fought...or only been in a few highschool/college fights.

For "minor disasters" as you put it, my cash is all I would need.

For "major disasters" where my cash was no good, my guns and friends is all I would need.

If things got so out of control that my money was worthless I would have no problem forming or joining a group that went around killing "bad guys" and taking all of their shit.

In minor disasters, who exactly are you paying? Stores? Or are you going to try and trade it for food to people who barely have enough for themselves.

During Katrina, how many people do you think there was selling, what little water and food they had, to people for cash? The food and water is what they need, not the cash. No one is going to give it up. What are they going to do with the cash they get from you? Use it to go try and buy some food? lol

And in major disasters, who exactly are "the bad guys" you speak of. To be honest, you and your friends, with no food or anything to trade, running around looking for people to kill so you can steal their food makes YOU sound like "the bad guys."

Sounds risky, 14 million people in the united states are registered gun owners. Are you a special forces guy or something that is going to give you the edge? I know 'round here. Those gun owners have been hunting most of their lives and know how to use those guns pretty damn well. I don't think stealing their food is going to be as easy as you think.

I realize that the worst case would be a bad earthquake. I am scared, as it's growing the number of very destructive earthquakes. There is no hope of forecast and you could be pushed down by your house crushing in the middle of the night.
I am planning to put a few important things in a safe place outside (backup unity, a notebook, food and some clothes), something to start up again with if we are lucky to go out fast.

For me, near Galveston, Hurricanes are the most realistic threat. Luckily we can see those coming.

Tornadoes are also a potential problem. Other than that, there are the possibilities of economy collapses, terrorist attacks, super volcano eruptions, giant solar flares knocking out electricity or asteroids smashing into earth type shit you hear how about.

Who knows, but its better to have some basic stuff, just in case.

@ HKSEO Rotzee

Are you in Krav Maga or Systema?

No,

I've been in martial arts since I was 5 years old. Tae Kwon Do mostly as a kid, with Boxing and Muay Thai. And now mostly Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for the last 5 years, with some other MMA training. (Wrestling, boxing, muay thai etc)

During Katrina or any other similar disaster I guarantee you that I could have bought absolutely anything I wanted with my cash. Period. If you don't understand this you've never lived through such a situation.

I could buy food and other necessities from hoarders, looters, or any number of people. Of course they will take my cash because the majority of them will be broke and they know "it" will be over soon.

And in major disasters, who exactly are "the bad guys" you speak of. To be honest, you and your friends, with no food or anything to trade, running around looking for people to kill so you can steal their food makes YOU sound like "the bad guys."

Um no. The bad guys are the animals who would be running around raping and pillaging. In a true doomsday type scenario I wouldn't hesitate to kill people like this and take their shit.

A very interesting read is this guy's account of living through the economic collapse in Argentina Re-directing...

Different than a sudden castrophe like an earthquake but very englightening as to what is really important to someone who actually lived through it. A couple of highlights:
- Cash on hand not in the bank because the banks are closed and ATMs emptied quickly
- Hand gun because you need to carry it concealed
- Food and lots of it because the distribution system is disrupted

Read his story, it's worth your time.

Lol, bro your delusional. I've been through two major hurricanes and you don't "Know it will be over soon"...When you fuck up and think you can "stick it out", (or you have no where else to go) then you find your self two weeks into it and they haven't even turned the water or electricity back on in your house. Thats when your going to realize you should of thought this through better. You really can't even get around to find places or people that have food or water to buy OR steal from.

There was three feet of water in our house, trees that fell through the roof and collapsed the ceiling. Roads where impossible to drive on, trees and telephone poles down everywhere. Fucking boats on the roads, piles and piles of just..wood and shit everywhere.

Backed up sewage all over the place, no bro...you were fucked. You had to eat and drink what you had to eat and drink in your house. And you had to wait until people came and cleared the trees from the roads just to even drive down it. Nobody was offering any food or water to sale. Don't tell me I haven't lived through it.

Let me show you something...this was the major highway that would get you out of town. And this is way after the storm.

1.jpg

These was what our streets looked like...

2-3.jpg

And this is what some neighborhoods looked like...

4.jpg

Here are the people you would of had to either "Buy from, or steal from". Either case, you wouldn't get much.

3.jpg

Now here is some personal shit, this is all 3 WEEKS after IKE hit. This is when shit finally was clean and you could move around a little. You can see how high the water mark was on the fridge...it was a little under waist high...

Screenshot2012-06-08at22402AM.png

Here is all the debris and sewage that just floated up to the door.
Screenshot2012-06-08at22317AM.png

...debris that just busted through the broken windows...

Screenshot2012-06-08at22346AM.png

Wooden planks that shot through doors like bullets...

Screenshot2012-06-08at22454AM.png

Here is my dads neighbors house and only transportation smashed under a tree....he was STUCK in his house and had no way to drive out...not like there was anywhere to drive to. When it first hit, trees blocked every road everywhere. You couldn't really even WALK out of your own yard, let alone drive anywhere.
Screenshot2012-06-08at22604AM.png

The other neighbors
Screenshot2012-06-08at15954AM-1.png

Here is the ONLY road off his street, 3 WEEKS after the storm, after people actually came and removed trees enough for cars to get through. This is when it was "cleared out"...before this...roads looked like..fucking forests. Everywhere you looked, was just the tops of trees on the ground like giant bushes you couldn't walk or drive through.
Screenshot2012-06-08at22642AM.png

And even some of the roads where still blocked.
Screenshot2012-06-08at22846AM.png

Everyone who was stuck in their house, was STUCK in their house. You had to live on what you had stored in your pantry. There were no Rapist running around to steal from. There was no FEMA passing out food. There wasnt shit. There were only empty, destroyed houses...or other people surviving in a nearly destroyed house off whatever they had in THEIR pantry...and it wasn't for sale and neither was our shit.

Any thing you could of bought, would of been minimal...nothing to survive on.
And we didn't even have it bad as Katrina. Why don't you watch this video, and re-remember what it was like...and then you let me know which one of these people you plan on buying food and water from.

Hurricane Katrina - YOU MUST WATCH THIS - YouTube

The guy holding up the baby, screaming at the camera's "WE NEED FOOD"...or how about the 3 guys on the roof with "SOS" written on it.

Not them? oh, ok....how about the people walking through waist high water, with all the shit they brought with them, in a trash bag hanging over their shoulder....walking..unsure of where they are going. Is that the guy?

Let me ask you, this...when you find this "magic retard" who wants money instead of what little food he has, how much are you going to buy from him? Is he Jesus? Cuz if not, that piece of bread and fish he has isn't going to last you any longer than it was him and BOTH of you are going to be screaming at the reporters that you need food and water.

One of the most famous quotes from Katrina, "All this water everywhere, and nothing to drink". Bro, if that shit happens to you...you're going to need to be SAVED....and you better hope you have enough shit to last you, until you GET saved..or to last you while you walk to where ever the fuck FEMA set up.

Your cash ain't gonna mean jack shit to anyone, they are going to tell you to go fuck yourself because any food or water they DO have...probably isn't enough as it is. They are starving, thirsty, desperately sad, angry, borderline crazy and I promise you...cash is the last thing on their mind.

Um no. The bad guys are the animals who would be running around raping and pillaging. In a true doomsday type scenario I wouldn't hesitate to kill people like this and take their shit.

So your plan is to wait around for people to start raping and pillaging, then your going to go attack these psycho's lol Bro, why do you think they are running around pillaging? ITS BECAUSE THERE IS NO FOOD lol. They are going to be in the same boat as you...I guess you two can both steal the food, neither one of you have. lol

I'm not telling you to go stock up like doomsday is tomorrow. But it would be smart for you to have a decent amount of canned food in your house that you rotate, a water filter or at least a few packs of water bottles you keep in your pantry that you rotate into the fridge MINIMUM. When shit hits the fan, at minimum, you have to survive until help comes.

And I promise you this, it never comes soon enough, and you never know WHEN it will happen.
