Matt Cutts on Directories

When considering submitting to a directory, I’d ask questions like:

- Does the directory reject urls? If every url passes a review, the directory gets closer to just a list of links or a free-for-all link site.
We are very stringent about keeping web spam out of this directory. We currently reject 20% of submissions because they are not good enough.

- What is the quality of urls in the directory? Suppose a site rejects 25% of submissions, but the urls that are accepted/listed are still quite low-quality or spammy. That doesn’t speak well to the quality of the directory.
Low quality submissions are exactly what we won't accept.

- If there is a fee, what’s the purpose of the fee? For a high-quality directory, the fee is primarily for the time/effort for someone to do a genuine evaluation of a url or site.
Our fee is to maintain the listing over the year (constantly improving it), continue development of the site's feature and traffic, as well as to check new submissions against our guidelines.

Every now and then somebody decides to build something awesome.

They decide not to cut corners, make everything perfect and truly strive to make something outstanding.

Community seo doesn't cut any corners. Guerrilla has poured his life into this project and it shows. I would call it the future dmoz but dmoz is an abandoned wasteland with 90s web design.

Look, the fact of the matter is something great is being created, and we're being offered the opportunity to get in at the ground level. A listing is a traffic source, ultra high value white hat link and "certification" that your site doesnt suck.

Right now we have the chance to get in for life. Don't miss this train. Its going places.

One of our special projects has come to an end, so we'll be going through all of the new submissions to make sure they are as thick with content as possible.

The last 6 or 7 days have been very hectic, we're making a lot of changes on the administration back end and optimizing the front end load.

We have sub400ms load times.
89 files changed, 8217 insertions(+), 8367 deletions(-)
9000 lines of code changed.

It feels really good to be making this sort of progress. This weekend, I will endeavor to show some video of what we have going on.

I think we'll also have time to add more authority entries into the directory next week.

Just caught the train. Listing has been indexed in a matter of hours. Epic!
We're seeing results show up very quickly in the SERPs. It's encouraging to see our users content getting indexed quickly.

I got my listing already...

I got my listing already! Glad I did. Multiple high PR links instantly.

Hint: It's the last screenshot on his post!

Submitting two more sites that I've been working on. Guerilla won't accept most of the niches I'm in but CommSEO is so powerful for local stuff that it's forcing me to branch out. I don't have SEO clients but if I did, I'd start right here every time.

This is really quite amazing. I didn't believe that a directory link could matter that much, but I just conducted an experiment that made me a true believer.

I picked a dozen random websites from the Community SEO directory and plugged them into Ahrefs.

What shocked me is that almost every single time, the Community SEO link was in the top 3 strongest backlinks.

Give it a try and you'll see for yourself:

https://communityseo.com/directory

Just don't pick the newest sites, because they haven't yet been picked up by Ahrefs.

Well played, guerilla!

I haven't bumped more because I've been very busy trying to finish up 3 new features. Hopefully I will have more to say tomorrow.

Also, I want to remind everyone, that pricing changes at the end of Dec. It's going to get more expensive to submit, and frankly, I think the current offer is so good, it's almost free, and I am certain a ton of people who have submitted will agree with me.

Reading this, I think we're going to do a study at Ahrefs and Majestic SEO on how a connection with us is judged.

I do know that for 80% of our submissions, their listing page on CSEO is on page 1 of the results for their brand term. I also know for one site, we were on page 1 for their local search term, which iirc brought them a bunch of business (because our page functions as a point of contact for local businesses).

I bought another CommSEO submission a day or two ago.

its already indexed in Google! wo0t!
Thank you very much.

I second this.

Indexed within 12 hours of submission. Will be picking up some more listings before the end of the year.
Awesome, thanks M.

Thank you. I really, really appreciate it.

++++++++++++++

So I have been finishing up a couple new content features...

For local: You can now list payment types your business accepts.

And for authors who want to link their website to their G+ profile, or associate their business listing with their G+ profile

Note, the authorship feature needs documenting and more testing, because sometimes authorship is flaky, but it appears we have it working properly now.

This stuff is sort of a big deal for me, because we're not using Wordpress or some cookie cutter CMS. The entire website, front and back has been coded basically from scratch. Every feature we add, is something we code in. There is no other website like CommunitySEO. Certainly, there is no other website directory that offers as much content depth for the listings (and we have more coming).

The queues are clear, and I am ready for more submissions today.

Not sure your site makes the grade?

PM me and I'll take a look at it and let you know.

Just got my second listing. Thanks guerilla!
Yw. TY!

The new authorship feature is awesome, btw.
:) Still needs a bit more testing.

Today, we've been working on adding reviews to listings. That's a bigger project that may take a week or two before it is ready for primetime.

Still looking for submissions. Today is the day to get your sites, your client sites, your best sites, into CommunitySEO.
