Cigarette price hike

imho All behavioral taxes, whether or not you agree or disagree with the behavior, is the exact opposite of freedom.

That said, if you're a nonsmoker who doesn't understand why people would want to smoke. Keep it that way. If you do try to explore why, do it while sober so you'll hate it and never want to try it again. Don't get smashed drunk and try a cigarette for the first time. Same goes for when you're super stressed.

Rofl good luck trying to fight a war with us indians. We got tanks motherfuckers.

I usually smoke just a pack every few weeks during the winter. Really enjoy it and as roundabout said it calms you down, allows you to think, and is enjoyable when you're outside in the cold looking over the snow.

...During the summer I just have no desire at all. Actually last time I had a cigarette was late March in NYC.

I'd personally take an increase in dopamine from caffeine. Sure it may or may not be as potent but at least I know I'm not screwing over my long term health.

Although to be fair, I'm genetically affected a lot more by drugs. Just a single Pepsi makes me feel on top of the world.

Trust me, I get my fair share of caffeine lol. A 200mg caffeine pill hardly does anything, besides keep me from falling asleep lol.

Adderall fucked me over. Such ridiculously insane levels of dopamine and other neurotransmitters it messes with. I have a pack of cigs maybe once a month just because I'm bored. IMO I don't know how anyone could get addicted to them. The effects are so little. After abusing addies for a few months, none of these substances even feel like drugs to me.

Lesson to be learned: Don't fuck with hard drugs like amphetamines and you will actually be able to enjoy/appreciate the less harmless drugs like caffeine and such.

Have you noticed due to the new Health Care legislation theyre not allowed to print LIGHTS on the packs now? The color of the boxes remains the same to let you know, but you won't find the word LIGHT on them moving forward. Talk about stupid.

It's a good time to be in the e-cig business.

And I've officially been smoke free for 52 days now.

If your going to smoke, at least smoke something worth smoking (aka marijuana) :rasta:

the truth.

and for the nicotine fix without the health problems:

I smoke unfiltered Pall Malls, which for some fucking reason cost more than every other brand of cigarettes on the shelf everywhere i go (when I can find them, which is rare.) With the last tax hike I'm now paying $7.70 per pack. WTF. Glad I don't smoke much.

Not trying to get on a soapbox here, but I don't understand why people would suck toxic smoke into their lungs voluntarily. Sure, I smoked as a teenager cause I thought it was cool and still have the occasional cigarette now in social settings, but the truth of the matter is that it creates long term health problems and is horrible for your body when done on a regular basis.

In other words, now is a good time to quit. :) Not only will you be saving money, you'll be doing your body a favor.

This PSA brought to you by MyOwnDemon.

Fuck you, we've seen the commercials, we know. I'm so sick of people telling me how bad smoking is for me. YES I KNOW, IT WILL KILL ME. Raising the price of cigarettes isn't gonna get me to stop, I'm just gonna start mugging you to pay for them.

I don't want to start a whole health discussion here, but what isn't bad for you? Too much alcohol, too much fat, too much salt, etc., etc.

3.5% of cancer deaths worldwide are attributable to alcohol drinking.

compared to:

Of the 514,000 cancer deaths expected to occur this year in the United States, slightly over 164,000, or nearly one-third, are directly linked to cigarette smoking.

3.5% vs 30%... hmmm

I look forward to my smoke breaks, they're calming, meditative almost, and I actually do good thinking during those ten minutes.

"Upon entering the bloodstream, nicotine immediately stimulates the adrenal glands to release the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline). Epinephrine stimulates the central nervous system and increases blood pressure, respiration, and heart rate." - NIDA

Sounds calming to me...

I really don't care if anybody smokes, as long as it's not near me... so thank fuck the government banned smoking in all public venues, I can go to a bar or club and come home smelling of sweat instead of tobacco smoke.

I don't know how anybody can do it without thinking of their future and as someone above said it's best not to try and understand it. The way I see it is when you're lying in the hospital bed hoping the chemotherapy is working will you think to yourself "yeah it was worth it, I'd do it again" or "fuck I shouldn't have smoked all those years". If it was discovered tomorrow that drinking tea turned my stomach black and gave me a 17% chance of developing stomach cancer (same as smoking is to lung cancer), I'd never have another cup of tea for the rest of my life, you'd have to be a complete imbecile to keep drinking it no matter how good it tastes.

this thread got a long way before anyone mentioning e-cigs, wonder how high prices will go

I bought an ecig a while back. What a waste of money. It doesn't taste anything like fags, doesn't smoke like a cigarette and actually tastes more like the old smoke machines you get in the local discothèque.

Everyone has their vices. Everyone has something they enjoy that they know is unhealthy and will probably result in a painful death down the road. To say you don't understand why someone would do something they know is unhealthy and do it anyways implies you don't do anything knowingly unhealthy yourself.

I can't stand cig smoke. Nasty shit. We all know the friend/co-worker who smells like a russian blackjack dealer. But imho they should lower the price and the tax. Let people fry their lungs. Free country.

In exchange for lowering the overall cost we need a litterbug law that fines every jackhole that gets caught flicking butts out the car window or putting them out on the sidewalk, etc. Put your trash away, people. It's just basic decency. Of course a fine like that wouldn't come close to generating the kind of bank that a sales tax would, but it would make money, it's less ridiculous, and it promotes something everyone can get on board with.
