The ass clowns that run this state are once again gouging us to make up for their own incompetence.

Cigarette Tax Increased to Keep New York Running - NYTimes.com

The best part? They're going to try to impose the hikes on cigs bought on Indian reservations (best place to get cigarettes for $5 or less):

"One Indian chief has said that trying to collect taxes would be considered an act of war."

Cigarette prices are already out of control, especially in New York. I was in NYC a few years back and paid just under 9 dollars a pack for Camel Filters. I miss getting them for 5 bucks/pack in LA. :(

relevant post - I'm out of the country right now enjoying all the flavored cigs that I can. I didn't even know newports had a line of different flavors :D :D.

Fuck, now I want a Dominican cigar and some whiskey.

Not trying to get on a soapbox here, but I don't understand why people would suck toxic smoke into their lungs voluntarily. Sure, I smoked as a teenager cause I thought it was cool and still have the occasional cigarette now in social settings, but the truth of the matter is that it creates long term health problems and is horrible for your body when done on a regular basis.

In other words, now is a good time to quit. :) Not only will you be saving money, you'll be doing your body a favor.

I appreciate that you're coming from a place of experience and aren't just some ignorant liberal fuckwad (like the people who passed this bill). I'll say the same thing I say to everyone who asks: Fuck you, I like it.

Assholicism aside, I recognize it's bad for you, and have certainly tried to quit. And I don't want to start a whole health discussion here, but what isn't bad for you? Too much alcohol, too much fat, too much salt, etc., etc. People should be allowed to make (unhealthy, unwise, uneducated) decisions and not have Big Brother try to cash in on it.

More importantly, there will be a serious side effect to raising these prices, and that's fueling the black market. The anti-smoking and anti-unhealthy attitude that this country seems to be wrapped up in is edging us dangerously close to another Prohibition. I wouldn't be surprised if 10, 20, or 30 years from now we wind up in a similar place as 100 years ago - bootlegging and violence because people want to get their fix in illegal ways and have no alternative.

I actually just quit smoking yesterday and I hate my life right now

Think of it this way... you'll be much healthier if you are taxed to buy cigarettes.

Come to think of it, you'll be much healthier if you're taxed to buy soft drinks, potato chips, pizza, and other junk food. In fact, the state should just impose a broad-based fat tax. That'll do the trick. That'll make folks healthy.

And since we can't actually force people to exercise, the state should draft a National Physical Activity Plan, where "one day, all Americans will be physically active and they will live, work, and play in environments that facilitate regular physical activity."

Just think of it. I know... awesome!

What's next on the docket?

Population out of control? Tax sex. Need more young people to float social security in thirty years? Tax condoms and pills.

Want guns out of the crazies' hands? Tax bullets.

Want people to read less and watch more television? You know what to do... tax books.

Don't like what some online news agencies are saying? Well, just say you "want to save the iconic newspapers from a horrible recession." Then, pass a news tax on 'em.

And what about those folks who keep complaining about how the government is getting too involved with people's lives? Well, they just don't get it. We're trying to plan a society here, darn it.

Go to L.A. and ask anybody on the street. LOL

If you are having a smoke due to social settings, you're STILL doing it to be cool, IMO.

We don't smoke because we think it's cool. I battle daily with the knowledge that smoking is bad for me, and what steps I'm going to take to quit. It's a very addictive substance. I look forward to my smoke breaks, they're calming, meditative almost, and I actually do good thinking during those ten minutes. Yeah, I'm a fucking idiot for smoking, I won't argue with anyone, but there's an old line from a Marillion song that needs quoting..

"..there was something about
Roman candles fizzing out,
that shined a little light on me now.
We burn a little brighter now."

I don't understand why people WOULDN'T want an increase of dopamine.

It's a risk/reward type of deal. lol

I'd personally take an increase in dopamine from caffeine. Sure it may or may not be as potent but at least I know I'm not screwing over my long term health.

Although to be fair, I'm genetically affected a lot more by drugs. Just a single Pepsi makes me feel on top of the world.

one of the benefits of living in KY is our dirt cheap cig prices lol... avg. pack is like $3-4 anything over $5 is a tad pricey.. haha.. i have no desire to quit but i really do need to go back to just the occasional daily cig and with drinking only im smoking like a freight train right now.. and even though its bad for ya no matter what I really would like to cut back.....

I had my last fag about a month ago. I've given up about 10 times before and this time I read Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking. It's really opened my eyes and so enabled me to see smoking for what it is.

I still think , "Oh this was easy, one fag won't hurt, because i can stop again." Trouble is that's what's always happened and has always resulted in me restarting again. After reading that book it won't happen again. I've gotta be a total fucking spastic if i'm gonna start smoking again, because once I really assessed it, I realised I don't enjoy it and it does nothing positive for me. I simply enjoyed supplying the addiction.

Fucking hell i sound like Moby or some conceited cunt who's found God. Bollocks. Giving up is easy and if you're serious get that book. :D
