Browser MMORPGs | Thoughts

Tainted, here things get really interesting :)

You have Skype or similar?

Let me just say that I'm well aware of everything you've pointed out. It's the full truth. Me- I am an absolutist. Browser games are one of the largest revenue generators on the planet right now. As far as gamers being happy or not... I just don't give a damn. What matters is churning out as much revenue as possible and repeating it infinitely. I am sure you recognize this among CN developers. Let's say I love cutthroat industries, and bleeding overheaded Western competition to death is one of the best sports around :)

Let's chat some time? I'm not evil.

Tainted, considering that I've purchased, ran, and developed a number of browser based games, I have one thing to say.... you are absolutely RIGHT. The shear shitstorm of exploitable code in most games out there is absolutely incomprehensible. Heck, even the big players don't realize they need to place mutex's in their marketplace code and then wonder why it's so easy to dupe. Not to mention the game designers often never imagine anyone in their economy could command as much virtual currency as they do and essentially make everything worthless.

Ok so let's see, you have your shitty browser MMO clone for $300. Now what? If you want to make some good money you need to get users on your game, don't you think this is going to cost a bit more than $300? Unless you have a unique idea it's not going to spread very virally and without spending $50k+ marketing it your game is shit anyway.

I would love to help design a game, regardless of the perils.

If anyone needs a writer/designer for a game, PM me. :)

You really underestimate the power of forums and bored people. All the browser games I played were because someone posted "Hey guys check out this game lets all play it" $50k+ marketing LOL. Youre not trying to make the next neopets in this idea...

Developing a good game from scratch wont cost less than 300-400K.....securitywise... if WoW is being hacked all the time, and it's probably the game with the highest security levels in the world, imagine what these guys will do to a medium size game.....

Now, the secret is not making or buying games out there... great.. let's say you bought one for the price you say... then what??? as tainted said before about the way these games make money....if your game doesn't have the right spenditure curve in it, there is no way you are going to make any money of it.....

Been on the marketing side of games..... Been advertising all the big publishers sending them millions of players every month.... and they don't seem to be stopping anytime soon.... I'm not saying they are not making money, but not anyone can do it as the big guys do...

Get a fucking clue.

Yes good games spread virally on forums etc, but these are generally good unique games with lots of members - not your shitty little mafia wars clone that cost you $300. I'm sure you could buy a $300 clone game and make a bit of money from it, but it's not a solid business plan.

Anybody making serious money from owning their own game has a marketing budget over $50k, if you don't think that's true then you're retarded.

LOL $300. More like $300k. Any game company that you know of has raised millions in venture funds. Developers don't come cheap.

So I'm sure a lot of you are aware of casual game offers lately. As affiliates they make a relatively well performing vertical.

Here's the kicker though-- these games cost no more than $300 to make

People began to realize this and now there's a new browser mmorpg popping every month.

Funny you mention they are cheap to make... hithere (ex # 1) is part of Oak Pacific Interactive, which got over 450 mil in fund not long ago

I dont believe they got that much money to make a 300 USD game....

and they owe me 5 figures.... but that's another story....

'

hahaha owned

It's not really about that.....
you can buy $20 Rolex in China that look like the ones that cost $100. At the end of the day, maybe what evelynds was saying is that you can get a cheap pirate copy of a game for that, but it's completely Illegal, just as it is to produce those $20 Rolexes.......

I just dont believe that ANY of the examples that you gave are games that cost $300 to make.... especially Earth Eternal... my friends at Sparkplay media would go wild if I ask them if they really spent $300 on it....

there is no way anybody is going to sell you a viable scalable product for $300 or $3k or $30k. 300k maybe. just like with anything else, if they were making a killing with it they wouldnt need to sell you anything

Like that time I bought ACAI of a post in a forum.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were all using the same engine though. Like seriously, ever since Evony (Civony) came out, literally every single one of these f2p companies has a browser-based game that's exactly like it.

Not that Evony was new, but, it seems like there has been another push because of it.
Here's a quick list of browse based games. Just go through a few

Browser Based MMORPG Games - MMO Hut

I also wouldn't be surprised if there was an engine to make a bunch of these games (or f2p mmo's in general, since they all are nearly identical, but are getting slightly better), but it sure as hell wouldn't be $300. And then there are the server costs. Maybe if you were running a mud. Maybe.

Ok yea I must be retarded. I guess I completely imagined the game I described. Must have been a dream or something. You gurus know everything. The game consisted of: join crew, train, perform actions to get money, buy stuff, fight. Unique? Not at all. Successful ? Very. Had zero flash, simple graphics. How many developers? One dude, not even full time. Marketing budget = most probably zero. If you'd like I can pm you the link and you can see for yourself, though I dont know how it looks now/how popular it is now. But at least for a year it was extremely popular, and if certain people spent as much as a grand you know he made bank considering he had over 50,000 players.
