Rex, I respect what you said and mostly agree.
Two sticking points in my head near the end though:
I'm originally from near Georgia... My parents used the phrase tough love quite a lot, like when both my brothers went to their various rehabs.
Once I moved away and saw the world, I found out that other parents do a WHOLE lot more for their alcoholic kids than just keep sending them back to rehab and calling it "tough love."

In my experience tough love is only a kinder way of saying "tough shit." You may not want anyone to die when you practice tough love on them, but be honest, you're also not willing to give them your kidney, either.It's not that we don't have compassion, but it's the tough love we give...
