What do you guys think, are arcade sites still profitable? Can they still make a lot of money? Anyone have any tips / guides to making one?

i was checking out bobschmuck's blog yesterday and he sited an arcade site about 2 months ago and apparently is doing pretty well with it. I thought there was oversaturation but this makes me think otherwise.

Aside from Adsense and link ads, how else are these being monetized?

I have been thinking of getting in the space. I think there is still a strong market, casual gaming is high in demand, and I have only seen 1 or 2 sites actually do things "right". Everyone else is throwing up a shitty script and hoping people involved in their game are going to click an adsense ad or three. Not a great strategy if you ask me.

I don't think that a persons priorities when they're playing a game is to be nice and click on an adsense. A site like this would have to be driven by cpm and probably would only be good for branding. Using Adsense would be difficult since it relies on context. What are you going to do? Write an article before the game to get the right context for the site? So I agree with Roadies. Adsense is not the way to go for an arcade site.

I find on my arcade's I have they do best with the email / zip submit offers, and the Adult Dating sites work well as long as they are geotargeted. You have to switch around the order of the games and switch up the ads for the offers that you display on a regular basis because you get a lot of repeat visits that notice the same ads.

But thats just from what I have seen, and what work's for me on my arcade's.

edit: adsense is not worth it for a arcade, because u might get .01 and the ads usualy are for other game/arcade sites even with a dissallow list of url's in adsense setup.

and i also use the "shitty" script that 1000000 people have, and it works great for me. Its all who you target, at least thats what i have found works best.

and a shitty script to someone might be the worlds best script to someone else, just look at some peoples myspace accounts, hoorible yet they love it, the same goes with anything else, just because its not good to you, does not mean its not good in the eyes of someone else.

just my 2cc's

If someone were to actually do something unique with arcades I think it would take off immediately.

PM me if any ambitious programmers would be interested in working on something, I've got an idea.

It's definitely still profitable. People aren't making as much money as they used to when the hype started up since AdSense and YPN have really started to crack down on people placing game thumbnails next to their ads.

anyone make an arcade site that is profitable? Want to share your links?

While we're on the subject, anyone know of good affiliate programs with arcade sites?

Another option for arcade sites are ringtones affiliates. I'll be posting on my blog the results with this type of affiliate.

If you really put in the time, any site can be profitable.

Here's the post on Bob's Schmuck's blog about the site, Game of the Day, that Trigatch4 was refering to. Bob has Schmuck Game and his wife has Girly Game. Most of his income comes from his flash game sites. Here's his November stat post

Trigatch4, you're fast, you posted about my son before I got a chance to! :)

so all his revenue is just coming from arcade? I'm surprised at how well the Yahoo ads are performing on an arcade site.

Actually, all the money from YPN is coming from 4 different arcade sites and the AdSense income is coming from information sites. :)
