This is a fairly instructive (and typical) order of operations exercise.

48÷2(9+3)

Parenthesis go first, so we have:

48÷2(12)

Now you do division and multiplication at the same time, going left to right:

24(12)
288

The catch is that a lot of people will want to go from this

48÷2(12)

to this

48÷24

which is incorrect.
 
this is why nobody uses that retarded division symbol except 4th graders. express everything with / or numerator/denominator.
