Polish President & 87 other people from goverment died in plane crush

Pretty sad - i am polish and although this really affects me in no way whatsoever, i'm pretty sure a lot of people i know are bummed out. even if youre not polish its still pretty hardcore.

also i agree with - what the fuck was your entire government doing on a single plane.

A polish guy flew into the ground...

Seriously though why put everyone in the same plane?

I'm polish as well, just heard about this, it won't be affecting me personally but wow.. That was an extremely hard hit they just took. Not only was the President on that flight, 2 of the presidential candidates of the top three parties in Poland were on it as well! I'm very worried about the recovery, I don't know how they'll handle this one..

Maybe just don't use Tupolevs. At least not ones more than 20 years old - they may feel the weight of age and try to fly home to die.

ps. China did it. The Falun Gong specifically. I have legit sources and see clearly through this fog of disinformation you Commie bitches, fer real.

Poland's Prime Minister wasn't on the plane, fortunately.

Very sad :(

The pilots were probably under a lot of pressure to get the plane down in time, at the destination airport in poor conditions. There are some newspaper reports of the president pushing a pilot in 2008 to land at Tbilisi airport during the Georgian/Russian conflict - the pilot apparently refused (not knowing the conditions on the ground) and continued on to their planned airport - he was later awarded a medal by their minister of defense for his decision to not land in Tbilisi as the president had instructed.

Kind of leaves a bitter taste in your mouth.

Both Air Force One 747s are the same age as this aircraft (and both are 1960s designs). Nothing wrong with the Tu-154... it really sounds like pilot error/pressure on the pilots to get down. Similar to the US Air Force 737 crash that killed Clinton's Secy. of Commerce on approach to Dubrovnik in the 90s in very bad weather.

ya but what about equipment? I mean, Boeing is probably making sure that those AF1's stay updated all the time

You know that plane was just in for major repairs in Dec 2009. And hadnt been used much since.

Might have been the first time someone tried to rely on the IRL system since then. Instrument Landing System.

But you would think in no matter what country the pilot flying the president would be the most kick ass fighter pilot in the last 20 years in their military.

Lots of questions.

Personally if I had written the policy... don't cram em all on the same plane, and if there's Fog in the destination, always have a backup location and extra fuel like the next major airport to continue to if it seems too risky to land.

yeah I don't disagree about AF1. I just find it hard to believe that Poland didn't maintain their presidential aircraft to a high standard - the Tu-154 doesn't have a poor safety record and Poland has their act together. We'll see, I guess. Very sad either way.

:P Kinda like when was the last time you seen a Polish Mechanic seriously fuck something up. Unlike their russian counterpart the country over for that matter.

the Russians claim they advised the pilot to fly on to Minsk, but he decided to land at Smolensk anyway.

I like how the Russians already made computer re-enactments:

remember, VIP pilots are under a lot of pressure to actually make the destination airport anyway. The USAF 737 crash that killed Clinton's Commerce Secy. was landing in thunderstorms at an airport that was closed for all other traffic because of the weather - ignoring a warning from another American plane that had landed prior suggesting that they divert. There are lots of instances of corporate jets crashing after the (well experienced) pilots were pressured by the pax to land against their best judgement.

not to mention the Polish president had criticized (in public) another pilot for his refusal to land at Tbilisi in 2008.

I wonder if the voice recorder transcript will ever be released...
