1 in 8 Americans Struggles With Hunger

I will not get into a flaming match with you because I know you are WF's No.1 keyboard jockey and knowing exactly where you live, what you look like, what you do, and probably how little you earn etc... I just have to say, that link is poor.

ROIshare!?!?

No need to PM you.

Step three: Now that you have free time and more money you can even start your own charities, get a dog, and maybe if someone is dumb enough to sleep with you spent extra time with your kids while dumb asses in forums expect you to give them years of experience in a forum p.m.

The NOTMILK Homepage! (MILK is a bad-news substance!)

Just another source that might shed some light on the negative effects of dairy. A lot of referenced studies on that page.

Another article (Cow's milk is the perfect food...for baby calves) - http://www.thebirthplace.org/articles/news/world_breastfeeding_week_august_1_7_2008

With that said, I'm pretty much right down the middle on the milk/dairy debate. Cheese tastes too good to completely eliminate from my diet, but I've definitely cut way down on my dairy consumption because I believe it's not all its cracked up to be.

Hunger is a problem with some children in America but Its not because our states/federal government don't provide for them. POS parents not giving a fuck/selling off benefits is the problem.

A family of three can recieve $800 a month in food stamps in my state. Thats more than enough to feed 3 kids if you ration it correctly.

Well fuck you for showing me that.... amazing that I've never seen anything about any negative study about milk -- and even our doctors suggest the kids drink milk.

We aren't talking about crack whore / ghetto type shit here man. At least in the experience at our food bank it's middle class folks struggling.

Plus nowhere have I (or anyone in this thread) suggested that our government should be paying for it. Food banks stay alive because of moderates who realize there are people less fortunate than then who accept that they could someday be in the same boat.

Go work in one or take a few minutes to run a box of food down to a local church that runs one. You probably won't see a ton of wellfare people there -- you will see people that look just like you.... and a few weeks ago, or months ago they lived with out the need for help.

Popeye - you edited your post after I quoted - but your absolutely right. 800 bucks SHOULD feed 3 kids in a month. If they are trying to feed 5 folks on that it's nuts.

However, food stamps aren't meant to buy everything for them. It's supposed to be supplemental help while you struggle your way back above poverty. I'm not advocating an increase in wellfare, government aid, etc.... I'm not for a nanny state at any level. That's why we have churches, organizations dedicated to helping the poor, and even training programs for low income folks.

Anyone should be able to climb out of the gutter with hard work -- even in this economy -- and even if they have to change their lifestyle.

Why having so many kids or why even have one if you can't afford it?

Work at a restaurant, food problem solved.

When you have some life experience, you won't make statemets like these. Happy married people with jobs have a kid. Somebody loses a job, gets sick or hurt, gets divorced, has trouble paying bills, and needs the safety net until they can get back on their feet.

I paid a lot of taxes last year and preparing to do it again. Right now my family is all on private insurance.

But right after I got divorced, my income was not enough though I worked. I had my kids on CHIPS for 6 months. Was I going to sacrfice their health and safety because I was too proud? No, that would be stupid. I also have taken unemployment benefits (which I have paid into for almost 3 decades) once in my life.

I have also worked in restaurants as a teen/young adult. All of them still charged us (50%) for meals. We could not just haul food home for others. That was stealing. I did not have kids the, but if I did, I wouldn't bring them garbage from somebody else's plate.

You people wouldn't be so mean if you had some life experience. get out of your basements.

I do volunteer at a church food bank a couple times a month and give to it weekly. I am not sure about other areas of the country but in my state their is a chruch/food bank on every corner (I live in the middle of the bible belt). ANYONE with children that is unemployed or low income can recieve food stamps. Again, I am not sure about your area but in mine, children going hungry is because the parents are too lazy or proud to ask for help.

We have some of the largest churches in the country (ORU ministry, Victory Christian) and they do great work in keeping the food banks open and supplied for the homeless, unemployed etc.

It's a pretty serious thing right now - I helped form a food bank a few years ago and still spend a lot of my time and money there.

The people coming in for help aren't wellfare folks - they are normal people who have jobs, etc...

When your taxes go up, your utilities go up, your food costs go up, your house payment goes up, your gas goes up, etc... somethings got to give. When you lose your job and get a new one earning half as much or your stuck doing part time work and you still have to feed your family food is nuts. All of our state employees have had their pay reduced, teachers are being forced to take unpaid days off, etc....

I've got a family of 6 - so I'm a good example.

Monthly expenses (food related that we buy every day)

Milk = $116
Bread = $57
Juice = $59

Yes we go through a half gallon of milk a day, a loaf of bread, and half a thing of juice daily. Average meal in my house is at least 40 dollars. Hell hamburger helper is 2 packages plus 2 pounds of hamburger. Chicken breasts can cost 30 bucks for one meal if you don't catch them on sale.

If I had a "normal" job and lost it and started earning half as much I'd be at the food bank too.

Most food banks operate year round but only get massive help at holidays. If you think it's wrong for americans to be hungry you've got a few choices.

1.) Donate money to food banks (many local churches have them).

2.) Donate food to the food banks year round.

3.) Get politically involved because this isn't going to get better as wages keep dropping.

What! Where do you live, and how many chicken breasts do you eat???
I buy fresh chicken breasts in bulk at Sams for around $1.75/lb. We'd have to eat over 15lbs of chicken at one meal to get to $30!

LOL, just bought some the other day. .99/lb - Maine FTW.

I live in DE.... I say this because I spent 30 bucks for chicken breasts at the "normal" grocery store last week. Apparently it's only something she buys at sams or when it's on sale.

My wife normally does the grocery shopping in bulk. I run into town about once a day and get little crap like milk and bread that we go through every day. You'll note that I said when it wasn't on sale.

It's true - drinking milk is pointless. On top of everything else that has been said, the absorption rate of the calcium in cows milk is extremely low - something like 2%. You get more usable calcium from 2 bites of broccoli than you do from a glass of milk. And as long as you are outside for a few minutes a day, there's your vitamin D. So really there is no point in drinking milk. It just makes you fatter and can cause other problems.

Just think about it ... no other adult mammals drink milk. Period. And on top of that, no other mammals drink the milk of another species. Nature is not stupid. Humans are.

I've worked with quite a few food pantries over the years.

The issue lies in deadbeat adults more than anything. Sure , there's people out there who GENUINELY can not afford food, and struggle with hunger. I don't know how much.

Never the less ,the food pantry I worked with fed something like 20,000 people per month in my area. It was estimated that maybe 30 to 50 percent of the food given out to people ends up being sold for drugs/booze. On top of that , there's quite a few articles that are finally coming out about how people have been scamming EBT for years, which is common knowledge.

Also , if you go through half a gallon of milk a day , and milk runs maybe $4 a gallon , how are you going through $110+ a month in Milk costs?

I also pay $1.50 per pound of boneless chicken breasts, around $1 a pound for frozen non boneless breast or thighs. The only times I see chicken breast in the $4 or $5 per pound when it's from some organic 'humane treatment' type place.

I've seen first hand how the hunger game really works. Mom or dad either smokes pot , is a junkie/methead/cokehead , a drunk or smokes a few packs a day. They make the choice to not feed the kids and support their habbit, and when they do get food for the kids they sell it for more of their habbit. We had one kid come in to church one time and refused to eat the meal provided to him , because he 'was the one that got to eat that day' , the meal? Half a can of mountain dew. Yes , it's awful , even more so when you find out the parent(s) are addicted to heroin.
