I've worked with quite a few food pantries over the years.
The issue lies in deadbeat adults more than anything. Sure , there's people out there who GENUINELY can not afford food, and struggle with hunger. I don't know how much.
Never the less ,the food pantry I worked with fed something like 20,000 people per month in my area. It was estimated that maybe 30 to 50 percent of the food given out to people ends up being sold for drugs/booze. On top of that , there's quite a few articles that are finally coming out about how people have been scamming EBT for years, which is common knowledge.
Also , if you go through half a gallon of milk a day , and milk runs maybe $4 a gallon , how are you going through $110+ a month in Milk costs?
I also pay $1.50 per pound of boneless chicken breasts, around $1 a pound for frozen non boneless breast or thighs. The only times I see chicken breast in the $4 or $5 per pound when it's from some organic 'humane treatment' type place.
I've seen first hand how the hunger game really works. Mom or dad either smokes pot , is a junkie/methead/cokehead , a drunk or smokes a few packs a day. They make the choice to not feed the kids and support their habbit, and when they do get food for the kids they sell it for more of their habbit. We had one kid come in to church one time and refused to eat the meal provided to him , because he 'was the one that got to eat that day' , the meal? Half a can of mountain dew. Yes , it's awful , even more so when you find out the parent(s) are addicted to heroin.
Fine we buy a gallon a day then - whatever
I live in a smaller town. I KNOW many of the people we help. I see them picking up food on saturday and meet them in my kids school later that week. Are there people that are scamming the system -- sure. But there are many more that genuinely need help.
Bluntly - that attitude sucks when you lump the druggies/scammers in with the real people that need help... eventually the real people don't get the help they need.
No one is forcing you to donate, help, etc... So your personal views are fine for you to have - just a little generic.
