I currently use 5 computers. They are all connected to the internet. Once every couple months a computer will break down and I will have to discard it. Often times the physical hardware is damaged from the spyware and it isnt worth my time trying to keep the computer running so if I have five computers I can keep my business runing even if a computer goes down.

I used to be abke to keep a computer runing for 5 years back in the 90's but nowadays with so much spyware and garbage on the net computers don't last as long as they used to. My old Mac from 1995 lasted for 6 years without a problem and continued to run until I gave it away.

I only use 3, if you want to include the laptop that I rarely use. I used to run on 30+ back in the spam days. But those days are long gone.

You must be an internet moron if your computers die in a few months from spyware. I don't even run any spyware or adware shit on my computer. I KNOW what to stay away from and what NOT to download. Seriously, were you born yesterday?

Even people I help with computers can nomrally go 8-12 months before their PC needs a "cleaning", were talking serious porn junkies and people who believe popup ads etc.

My PCs last until I want to upgrade or replace them with a new unit, I build. My oldest PC I used was for 4 or 5 years and then I sold it to someone who used it another 3 years and then finaly replaced a HD.

If you build a quality computer with quality parts it will last a VERY long time and if you don't download shit and use a virus scan and some sort of spyware protection you should be fine.

I have a new laptop I got over summer, my PC which is nearly 2 years old and still on the fist install of WinXP Pro and still running FAST. I also have an older AMD XP2200+ box that I use for backup/data storage and is hooked up to my TV. I have 2 external HD's on my PC, and 3 internal. REdundant backup, my PC also has 2x21" monitors so it's hard for me to use any other setup for any amount of time!

Nowdays a quality built system will last a very long time since most applications run fine now on 2yr and even 3yr old systems. Games really keep the "push for more speed" thing going... nowdays for everyday users its more how to keep them cooler, and consume less power.

Anyway, daily I use my one PC and occasionaly during the week will use my backup PC.

Windows updates + Firefox + spybot + zone alarm + antivirus + stay away from hardcore porn and warez = Safe happy computer for a long time. :D

An internet moron that made $xx,xxx online last month pure profit...

Dell sells systems for 300 bucks. I can get used ones cheaper. Who gives a shit if I have to replace it every couple months. If im gonna spend 3K on a gaming rig then yea make sure it lasts longer but my workhorse computers don't last very long. The price of desktops has cratered inthe past 3 years. People are literally giving them away on ebay.

One thing has nothing to do with the other:xomunch:

3k? My system cost me around $800 or $900 and is fast and like I said has lasted over 2 years. If you new about the internet(spyware, etc, not making $$) and quality components you could have your system last that long too. But if you don't mind using sub-par systems and throwing out a few hundred bucks every couplemonths for a slow computer than keep doing that.

I'm just saying there are OTHER options ;)

AL- If you want me to make you a computer (0 profit for me - you just buy components) I'll gladly do that and you can then report back with the performance increase, and how long it lasts. :D I'll setup automated scans for you too.

/me converts you to quality PCs heh

I don't see how that's possible. The worst thing it can do is force you to reformat your drive and reinstall windows. Your problem is shitty components.

I have one custom built machine with quality parts that my buddy and I put together.

Your philosophy is bizzare to me but as long as your data is consistently backed up, I can see how the computers in your set-up could be completely expendable.

Contrary to popular belief you can get your computer trashed easily by visiting non porn sites. Any site that isn't an edu, gov or a PR8+ has the potential to harbor auto-installs. i have gotten spyware from ebook sites, wallpaper sites, ect. Just by visiting the page.

And the removal programs can't get rid all of it. You have to reinstall everything to to beat it.

Use Mac. No spyware or anything like that.

My main computer is Mac and then I have 1 Windows PC for misc stuff and 1 Xbox running Linux server.

I used to make up excuses to use any old exotic servers I could get my hands on (Sun, DEC, SGI etc) so i think my record was like 10 computers running.

Now I'm free of my addiction, down to two computers (workstation/server). Got rid of my laptop a few months ago since I never used it.

I use 1 workstation, 1 mac and 1 notebook (I travel a lot and the notebook and 3g modem helps me stay connected). I only really use the mac to things on some of my white hat sites.

Erm.... why the fuck use more than one? Reinstalling all the required software, protection, games, servers, passwords, history, email makes me feel like I'm getting rimmed by Gene Simmons.

Keep your computer maintained and it'll love you long time.

I just use a $3K laptop and it'll last me a few years. I buy staff the same.

Two: one workstation one laptop... WTF do you guys need all those computers for? If I run more than 2 I would definitely spend a lot of time looking for where the fuck I left this orthat file... a pain in the ass!

Umm, I use Xbox for perl/php scripts, Windows PC is for some Windows programs like Keyword Elite and it's also my harddrive server where I keep my music, movies etc.. I try to avoid using Windows as much as I can so I use Windows PC by remote software from my Mac. I like to have separate machines for work and other use so that's why I have 3 different machines :)
