Ever had men in suits come to your door...

Yeah, when my mother died, a team of detectives came to the house to ascertain whether I had killed her. (This is actually normal operating procedure.)

A lot of people can poke fun at it, but let me tell you from experience, its not fun at all. Exactly as Nicky said.

When it was the feds/secret service for me when I was a kid, that was the scariest of them all, because they raided my father's house and I was cuffed in those plastic tieband cuffs immediately. Was then transported to a fed building and questioned for what seemed like weeks but was only 48 hours. Spent 2 more days in a small room holding cell, cried like the scared kid I was, couldn't eat because I was so frightened and nauseas (I seriously thought I would get 15 years in fed prison for what we did) but, was eventually released. All I got was probation, but couldn't open or touch a credit card of my own until turning 21.

You could be the roughest and toughest kid on the block, but when the feds come banging down your door, all age limits and rights are tossed out the window when its federal, not to mention you are caught so off-guard and are so intimidated you literally freeze on the spot.

When the AG came to my door a year and a half ago about that ringtone garbage I went a lil numb and got instant-dry/cotton mouth because I thought the saaame shit was going to happen again, except this time I knew I didn't do anything.

I've been visited by the feds at least 11 times since that one fateful morning when I got busted as a teenager. Every single time it was a feeling of pure terror. Not afraid to admit being scared of them for a moment. Although most of those times I contacted them (when I was in the adult biz I would report child porn sites all the time, so sometimes they would come and visit to learn how I'd find these scumbags). I'm still close with one of the agents from my adult days, and always get just a tad bit nervous when he calls out of the blue and I see the good 'ol "1111111111" or "00000000" as the incoming number.

That stuff taught me a VERY valuable lesson that I haven't broken since then. NEVER get into anything illegal, especially for profit. Plain and simple, its just not fucking worth it. Even if you're desperate to hit it big, or you think that its foolproof, doesn't matter, not fucking worth it. I'd rather be poor and free than rich and in prison.

Amen. That is the shit that gets most of us in trouble - Easy Money.

that's excellent advice...

I've had a few brushes with the law when I was younger... but nothing as extreme as what you've been through... just local cops n bullshit... got busted for selling weed when I was a teenager, that kinda shit...

I make it a point to stay of the legal side of the blackhat spectrum... I don't have a problem with doing things that are slightly shady every now and then, as long as it's legal... I do worry about some of these kids coming up today that automatically equate blackhat with illegal... seems like some of them are getting the wrong ideas... oh well, some people have to learn things the hard way I guess...

Wow, I don't ever get in trouble, I don't have any cool stories... I need to go start fucking up.

Two came by recently. Elder Smith and Elder Young. Nice enough, but wanted 10 percent of my income and for me to stop drinking.

I'm currently bulding a safe where i'm going to put all my drives and CD/DVD's with illegal content. On top of the drives i'm going to add thermite so if i ever get raided.. they wont have any hard evidence against me.

A couple of you need a copy of How to Be Invisible: The Essential Guide to Protecting Your Personal Privacy, Your Assets, and Your Life

Even the feds can't find the author of the book, LOL.

If you follow his instructions, there's a legal way to keep your home address invisible.
Yeah, and the feds would really say it if they knew who made the book. Money trails is what they do.

Oy. I feel like people underestimate these guys.
Look at any major raid they do. They're not knocking on the door at 5:30PM. They are busting their asses in, covering the house in seconds. If they really want you, my guess is your ass would be cuffed, hog tied, and in a van before you were even aware you'd woken up. You're not detonating shit.

I actually asked about a similar situation in my cyber forensics class not too long ago. Even if you manage to detonate your thermite (which is unlikely), they'll nail you with 'endangering an officer'.

Because, you know, fire's dangerous and stuff.

Well, first of all. It might be worth it. :D

Second.. if you connect your thermite to a button close to the door.. or a remote... or a phone.. you might have time to detonate it. But the best solution would be to have it in a room with some kind of sensors that would ignite the thermite if not the correct password were entered within 20 seconds. That would work even if they would knock down the door and throw you do the ground in 3 seconds.

And third.. if you keep the drives in a safe, inside a room with a heavy armored door, the thermite will destroy the drives before they can even get to them. So.. no endangering.

I actually just moved back to Texas about 6 months ago after living in California for 4 years. 2 weeks after I had left my old roommate called my brother and told him that 2 guys came to the house in suits with their hands on their weapons asking if I lived there. He said I had just moved to Texas. My old roommate didnt have my new cell number either. I called the local police department where I used to live and asked if anyone was looking for me and they said no. Is there anyone else I should contact to make sure no one is still looking for me? Or just I just lay low and wait for the door bell to ring?

You are as good as gone. Might as well get your will in before it's too late.

I have a feeling it's easier for them to find you than it is for you to find them. I'd just relax and wait for them to find ya. If they really want to, they will. However, if you think you know why they're asking for you, I'd lawyer up. And if you don't, get a good one's number, and keep it in your pocket.

This is all providing the story your old roommate said was accurate. He was probably overreacting.

I don't know about that, lol... The local sheriff where I live has failed to find me and deliver a court summons on three separate occasions over the past three years.

Haha wow. WF has some interesting guys here apparently.
But anyways, local sheriff and federal agents are completely different. Think about all that stuff geeks were whining about years ago. Patriot Act, Net surveillance, tracking cookies being everywhere, warantless wiretapping, even monitoring of SWIFT transactions/western union/paypal/e-gold. Not all of this requires you to be a terrorist, and these are all things that your local sheriff does not have, and the feds do.
And that's ignoring training and whatnot.
