Damn, you both beat me to it!
Popeye, there might be extremists in other religions stoning people to death and blowing themselves up, but when it comes to killing innocent people the Christians win hands down. From the Romans to the current war of terror, Christian extremists have slaughtered millions in the name of the Lord.
Given the popularity of their views amongst the powerful elite forgive me if I feel just a little bit more concerned about extreme Christianity than I do about extreme Islam. Bush and Bin Laden both want the world to be ruled how they want, Bush has been a lot more destructive in his efforts make it so.
Given the inevitability of the death of the body, we're all going to find out one day, one way or the other.
Some people have direct contact with the spirit world while alive on the Earth. For them, to doubt it exists, is to doubt their own senses.

The rest of us are gonna have to wait and see

Suggest you don't bother debating religion. Find the living saints of your ancestral religion, and get to know them instead. There's probably one close by.

George Bush and co are Christians and in my eyes they are certainly at the more extreme end of the scale.
That is implying that you can't have 'life' after death without God or some sort of higher power or even without religion. Why would you think that?
Personally, based on experiences, I have an idea (no beliefs) that there is some sort of existence separate from what we view as life and something exists in some way after death. No idea what, and no idea whether or not this existence may include or comprise of a higher power or god(s) and even if there is God then religion is still little more than social engineering at it's finest.
In my mind the issues are separate, but linked. Is there existence after death? Is there a higher form of existence (God)? Is religion bullshit?
Do you all really believe that the actions of Christians are condoned by all Christians? Basing your intolerance of all Christians on the actions of a few is a little ridiculus. Is every gun owner a murderer if a few gun owners kill with guns? That's like saying that everyone in the state of NY are Giants fans, when there are alot of folks who hate football, or maybe like the Bills or the Jets. You cannot categorize everyone in a group based on the actions a percentage of the group.

No certainly not, but when people choose to place themselves in a group associated with a certain set of values and a lot of attention is given to members of that group acting in ways that are contrary to those values (and that many people disagree with), it is natural for the group image to be affected - as popeye illustrated earlier with his comments about Islam.
Everyone is entitled to think or believe what the hell they like and no one should be discriminated against for any choice they make which does not affect anyone else.
For us, religion is a choice like any other. Like the choice to wear women's clothes or the choice to grow weed, some people will respect you, others will ridicule you. Look at the shit David Icke got for his religious beliefs... or Tom Cruise and co in the Scientology cult. (It's not a recognised religion here, hopefully I can call it a cult and be safe!)

I think there could be some form of higher existence, but a God in the Christian sense? Us made from his image? Impregnated a virgin? Going to come down and judge us all one day? No fuckin way.
Strip away all the theology and crap to leave the abstract concept of a supernatural form of existence that we probably aren't capable of understanding then maybe, but in stripping away all the stuff religions have added you remove the religion.

No, to take this further, I do not only see myself as an atheist, but also as a scientist (that degree has to be good for something, damnit!)

Be prepared tp have it ripped to shreds, as all weak theories are. That is what drives science and scientific advance.

That is correct. It's recently became very popular for the under 40 crowd to be atheist. Kinda like being gay was cool a few years back. I find this is true especially for the far liberal left. I believe it's a lash back against the conservative right, the war etc.
I do volunteer work with the elderly a couple times a month delivering food to them and I have noticed one thing. I have never met a dying person that was an athiest.
