This debate illustrates the problem with legislative decision-making in this country. Both opposing sides exaggerate what the other is pursuing to the point where they are completely unreachable. Is the answer to outlaw firearms completely? Absolutely not, but I also don't see that being suggested by any rational folks. Is the answer to allow anyone that wants to carry a firearm to have one with no opposition? Absolutely not, but very few are suggesting that. The problem is side A wants X and side B wants Z, we end up with all the worst components of Z and X, with none of the positives, because neither side wants to concede that exaggerations of their ideology could be counter-productive.

What happens the day you wake up at 3am to a smash downstairs, and realize somebody is in your house?
A more interesting question is - why is the United States so violent (and it's obviously not JUST guns - as per the Switzerland example)?

I think this was kind of my point.. why are they so violent? Many other countries have violent movies, violent video games, guns and whatever else the "experts" like to blame this sort of thing on.. yet this kind of thing doesn't happen there.
Why?
LukeP, i think you misunderstand the way the CNN website works.
When you click "World" , it doesnt take you to a page of news that the rest of the world see's, it takes you to a page of news stories with events happening in the rest of the world, ie not in the US.
Click Africa and you'll get news stories of stuff happening in Africa. But thats NOT the page African people see when they visit the CNN website.
A law enforcement official speaking on condition of anonymity said investigators believe Adam Lanza attended Sandy Hook school several years ago but appeared to have no recent connection to the place.
At least one parent said Adam Lanza's mother was a substitute teacher there. But her name did not appear on a staff list. And the law enforcement official said investigators were unable to establish any connection so far between her and the school.
Except gun control people always seize on incidents like this to try and introduce ineffectual laws that would have never prevented the incident in the first place.
What were the NRA and all the big pro-gun activists doing immediately after this incident? I guess they were sitting on their thumbs watching Two and a Half Men? Right. It's not one sided at all. Both sides of the debate rush to the table when this stuff happens because it's topical.
The nutcase that did this STOLE the guns he used. He tried to buy a gun from a sporting goods store but gave up because of the waiting period. In other words, the existing gun laws worked. It prevented a crazy fuck that snapped from being able to go buy a gun and shoot up a school.
He stole the guns from his mother, yes. His mother had a Bushmaster semi-auto .223, apparently with hollow-points, accessible to an unstable 20 year old kid. You can't tell me there is no imaginable legislation that would not restrict gun-owner rights while also limiting the possibility of individuals like Adam having access to them. Anyway, it obviously isn't that hard to purchase firearms legally even after, "snapping" as evidenced by Holmes.
However, he was still able to get guns because he stole them. How do you prevent that? What gun laws would have prevented that? None - so the whole fucking discussion is irrelevant and just another example of people using an isolated tragedy to push their personal agenda on everyone else.
What if assault rifle ownership required assessment of the mental health of the entire household? What if ownership of certain types of firearms also required ownership of identity-specific safes like retina or thumb? I'm not saying anything the extreme anti-gun folks are saying is logical, but assuming NO legislation whatsoever could have reduced the chances of this, or at least reduced the scale, is just as ridiculous.

I sometimes wonder if you are really just a TROLL account. You are the Pewep of conspiracy theory bullshit. I mean fuck man,The emergence of all these shills immediately after I post is starting to look rather suspicious.
The question must be asked: Who was really behind the Newtown tragedy? Was it those insidious forces who wish to render American citizens defenseless?
