Detained for Open Carry (Guy owns officers)

Look at every right you think you have, then ask yourself if the government can ever take it away.

Reminds me of a conversation I had with a family member:

Him: I own my house.

Me: It's yours. Nobody can take it away from you.

Him: Yep. Mine.

Me: What happens if you don't pay your property taxes?

Him: What do you mean?

Me: Nothing. Never mind.

Sorry, not being American I'm just trying to make sense of the debate.

I'm not reading this thread to be critical or to try to make any point, just wan't to get a sense of what the views are.

I had the impression, based on this thread, that Americans do not feel safe, do not feel protected by the police force, and therefore would be in support of abolishing it.

Would America be able to survive without State/City police forces?

Could the (geez, don't want to say citizens) population police itself?

Being that I cannot recall a single instance of a police officer preventing a crime from occurring, I'd say we'd probably have just about as much crime as we do now.

Last week I was leaving to meet a buddy of mine for dinner. I had a tail light out. So I get pulled over like 2 houses down from my house. Nothing scares me more than cops, and I've seen some scary shit.

I've never been arrested, I wasn't doing anything illegal beyond the tail light, but all I can think about when dealing with cops is they can lock me up or kill me if they want to.

So there's two of them, they walk up on both sides of the car, I have my hands on the wheel and I'm polite to them.

I guess it was apparent that I was pissed off/nervous. While one is running my ID for warrants the other is asking me all kinds of questions about where I'm going, and then asked what my tattoo says.

I told him it's a Jimi Hendrix quote. That was a mistake.

I drive a nice car. I'm clean cut. I live in a nice neighborhood. The only thing they had on me is that I like Jimi Hendrix. That was enough.

They come back and ask "what my problem" is. I was being polite with them. I told them I just don't like being pulled over. They ask if I have any drugs, I say "no". They go on to say it's going to be a lot easier if I just tell them, because they're going to find out anyway, etc.

They ask me if they can look inside the car. I tell them "I'm in a hurry, I'm not consenting to a search".

Cop comes back with "come on man, I'm being cool with you, I could give you a few hundred dollars in tickets, it won't take me 2 minutes to peek around, just be cool with me, if you're not hiding anything what's the problem?"

I should definitely know better, but just wanting them to leave me alone and knowing there's nothing they'd find I was like "whatever, take a look". So I get out, and cop #2 takes me, bends me over my hood and tells me to put my hands behind my back. He holds me there for about 10 minutes while they pat me down and go through all of the shit in my car.

Finally they let me go, no ticket or anything. But I'm still fucking pissed about it. They had me bent over the hood for 10 minutes in front of my neighbors looking like I'm being arrested, and even though I consented to it, I still feel like they were dicks and violated my privacy.

It turned out best cased scenario, but all it would take is someone dropping a pill in my car, or even the cop planting some shit to put me away. It may sound paranoid but there's a lot of people in prison who thought they had "nothing to worry about".

Three important reminders here...

1. Don't put yourself in a position where you have to deal with cops. I hadn't been pulled over in over 10 years. Not checking my lights put me in that position.

2. Don't talk to the police. I was trying to be cooperative so they'd hurry up. There's no "polite" conversation with cops, they're looking for a reason to press you. The questions about drugs came up immediately after the cop said "that's a cool tattoo, what's it say?" The second I said "Jimi Hendrix" it was like they thought I had a pound of weed in the car.

3. Don't consent to a search. They're very good at persuading you to do so. They basically said "cooperate or we're going to figure out a way to fuck you". I caved, I should have told them to hand me the ticket, even though they said otherwise they didn't have anything beyond the light to write a ticket for.

tl;dr - FUCK THE POLICE.

Where there any racial differences between you and the officers involved?

One was asian the other was white. I'm white. I don't think race had anything to do with it. I think it was just cops being cops. I live in a college area, and really, if I were a cop I'd assume just about every white guy in his 20's around here has weed on them. I'd guess a huge percentage of them do. Still, shaking people down for weed/drugs seems like a waste of time for people who are supposed to "Protect And Serve".

I'm not American. But then, maybe that's why the interactions I've had with the police in my country so far have been beneficial ;)

Good thing you aren't black, and it was a black cop and a white cop.

"But don't let it be a black and a white one 'Cause they'll slam ya down to the street top
Black police showing out for the white cop"

Yeah I've been stopped by Toronto Police numerous times in my life.

Never once felt threatened or scared.

But then you see the other side to them, and what happened during the G20.

Doesnt sound like it. Not that it should matter but what time of day was it? They love to use late night as an excuse to fuck with people with burnt out tail lights

Dude isn't immature enough to own a gun. Regardless of the law, walking around with a firearm in plain site is childish.

Thats ridiculous, there are plenty of legitimate reasons for open carry. Just because you dont feel there is a need doesnt mean someone else doesn't have one.

Ultimately, I haven't decided what my view on all of this is, however one question I would ask of you, and other 'open carry' supporters is, if you were to do a Pros vs. Cons, would you come up with any cons, or are you that convinced that open carry is the way to go and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it?

There is nothing douchy about walking around openly armed.

epic...

In your opinion, do the pros outweigh the cons when walking around openly armed ? I mean what can you expect if you run around like the guy in the video, you're basically asking for trouble / confrontations with police or other cool mofos wearing a gun too...

Question:
If police are useless, why not abolish the police force?

Surely if enough people support this, it can get passed?

Your logical fallacy is black-or-white

I R CONTANT RIDER.

there is absolutely nothing wrong with it?
My definition of right and wrong is very simple. Does it harm anyone else?

So in order for open carry to be wrong, I want to see an injured party. I want corpus delicti.

It's not legal where I live so it's not something I have considered. I would probably be open to it if I lived where it was legal.

Part of acting in an individualistic manner, is not being intimidated by all of the people who are jealous, envious, bitter etc about how you are willing to do your own thing, regardless of what the herd does or thinks.

It takes a certain kind of person, more often than not, someone who has had friction with the system before and doesn't see it naively as a benevolent panacea for all of society's ills.

I like this guy. He has balls. He does his own thing. That's admirable, regardless of how I feel about open carry. Society needs more people who are willing to stand apart from everyone else and point to obvious truths.
