Well at least we agree that the Religion of the past is immoral and anti-intellectual... But honestly, minus all the outdated, over-harsh events in the bible like guysmy quoted above, the rest of it is still very contradictory, even things that Jesus directly said or supposedly did.

That was an attempt to give REIMktg the tools to draw his own conclusions. Accepting religion is a passive process (spoon-feeding) but questioning it must be active IMO.

In my eyes the bible is historically interesting but downright harmful if used for moral advice.

You're going to find LOADS of inconsistencies, both metaphorical and literal.

Sidenote: It was the metaphorical ones that did me in... Like Jesus' blood being wine that we're all supposed to drink and shit like that. What were we, Vampires? What fucking good would it do even if we were drinking his real blood? Why was this a good thing? We'd probably have caught something; that's just can't be hygienic. (/rant)

So I see so many hard core difficulties. OK. So as not to think I picked my favorite let's discuss the first 2 contradictions brought up.

The blood is symbolic. The Catholics may believe something different but from a protestant perspective the wine is symbolic of Christ's sacrifice nothing more.

I have read a lot of the Bible, and yes, parts are not easily understood until you research and look into them.

The problem you are up against here is that only a newbie atheist would be reading a bible, or have done so recently enough to examine it for such a conversation. -Once we spend time as an atheist and perhaps a year or more passes, that book becomes a joke that we easily forget specifics about.

And the church is FULL of them, from baptisms (Let's mock-drown our child to show him he's special!!!!) to wearing crosses (you know, the roman equivalent of an electric chair... In 2k years are they going to be wearing little electric chair pendants around their necks??) and so on... I mean WTF???

Talk about an inefficient way to teach children how to have a good life...

If there is anyone I can think of off the top of my head that SHOULD be looking forward to heaven it's Stephen Hawking.

Imagine the hell the man has gone through for most of his life - and while I'm not saying he is the smartest physicist out there he is one of the better known.

Any Protestant Christian understands the underlying meaning of these activities. Even Baptism is an action of choice, not to be made by a child, but by an adult that chooses Christianity. Was Christ baptist as a child or adult?

I never thought for a moment that you'd fail to know WHAT they symbolize... sure there are explanations, just no good Messages here.

Step back for a moment from all of the explanations and try to see Christianity from an outsider's perspective... What does the Sum of all these weird-ass symbols and traditions look like?

Too me it now appears as a cult of mentally deranged vampire wannabes. -At least the Catholics appear that way, minus their pedophilistic side... The rest of the christian denominations are varying levels of lesser vampire cults.

-Not a good visage to put out in public. Pretty much the only people that ever become christians now are:

1.) People born into it
2.) People from even more fucked up religions.

But basically my point is that something that tries to be what a religion is intended for should possess a message that is appealing to outsiders. Christianity must have done so at one time, like in the Dark ages, but today it's message is pretty appalling.
