Email hacked

Yesterday I couldn't get into my hotmail account. I knew the password was right but I couldn't get in. I answered the secret question and reset my password and logged in. Today the same thing happened. Only now the reset password feature only has a 'send to email' option, and the email on display is not mine. The question is, how did this happen?

I've done a full virus scan, anti rootkit scan, malware scan - everything appears clean. It's not a keylogger. My password wasn't easy to guess, it was a random combination of letters and numbers, even so, apparently it wasn't 'strong'. But I don't see how that could affect it, as you can't brute force hotmail accounts since they brought in captchas.

Anyone have any ideas how they got in?

Who still uses Hotmail? Whenever I get an email from someone using Hotmail or Yahoo mail, I instantly think less of them. I have posted job offers before and disregarded any resumes that mentioned a Yahoo account.

I KNEW some fucking cunt was gonna chime in with the bullshit 'who still uses hotmail' crap. Dickhead, I have different emails but this was my first one. I've had this account for 10 years and still have use for it. If you don't have anything useful to say kindly gtfo.

I dont know much about hotmail or any email hacking for that matter, however - but i would contact hotmail and have them give you logs of IPs of all activity for your account over the past day or so, and perhaps start from there?

I would change all of your other emails that (probably) have that same password, too. If it was easy to bruteforce (if thats the case), it would be just as easy to do it to another account.

Assuming that you had that acc for 10+ years, im going to assume that its been posted on the internet somewhere and was probaly scraped?

lemme know what you end up doing, woudl like to know,

goodluck

Thanks. That's the thing I don't use it on another site. And it was a completely random password so it must have been cracked or something. Is it even possible to bruteforce hotmail or any other site that uses captchas?

If you are conviced your password was solid, I would start looking into other things like...

Are you running a wireless network... Is someone else connected to it?

Do you have any remote access tools installed on your machine? Could someone have logged into it while you were away?

Is it possible you logged into that account from someone's computer that is not as secure as yours?

Best of luck, having that happen is such a violating feeling. Hope it all turns out ok.

To be honest, security these days is pretty much just attemps to deter it - not really 100% secure, or making it where its so difficult you don't want to penetrate/hack it, but nothing is honestly secure secure.

Your best bet is to just get logs to a) confirm a different IP was being used to access ur account, and that'll be 100% confirmation you've been hacked.
b) not too sure what you can do with an IP address, trace it back to where the hacker WANTED to you see where it came from? i can give u a russian IP, and there isnt much you can do with that. lol

i would just change your passwrods, run scans, BACKUP BACKUP everything - and hope for the best.

I used teamviewer once. Although the process was active in my task manager the program requires authentication every time someone wants to connect.

Trying to get access back. Once I've done that I'll probably be able to get logs off them.

I still use hotmail. Hotmail ftw.

(although I usually put my domain name email in forms, which redirects to the hotmail account)

And yeah, sounds like either a revert or a forgot password. I won't post the links on here, but there's a bypass for the forgot password system that allows you to enter the password hint without needing the zip code. If your question was something like Pets name, all it takes is for someone to message you, have a chat, then say they're thinking of getting a dog.... but they can't decide what to call it. Do you have any pets?

;)

A revert takes a bit more time, but involves them finding out your name, address, DOB and IP, and basically submitting a particular form (again, I won't link to it here) and saying that it's their account, and they got hacked.

Always use a fake name/DOB in your hotmail. Sounds like what you've done is the best step to take so far.

Btw, it may just be a crypted keylogger. Have you tried Hitman Pro to scan your comp?

Lol @ whoever said "try contacting hotmail." Good luck with that. Give a ring to Google while you're at it.

Yeah good point. shits difficult when it involves money/billing - imagine when its in regards to a free account. highly doubted.

You may be able to get in through some yelling on the phone to get your hands on a system admin for security.

So basically your account could have been phished/hacked anywhere in the past 10 years. If the account was so important, you should have been more careful with it. Or, phased it out and used a more secure email provider.

The question is, how did this happen?

I'm going to venture a guess that you fell for a phishing scam, or you use a universal password. Or both.

If you don't have anything useful to say kindly gtfo.

You aren't in any position to tell anyone else what to do.

And how the fuck does that help me now? 'You should have' shouldn't be in the vocabulary of someone who wants to help. And since it's clear you're not here to help but rather act like a smart ass, I told you to kindly gtfo.

Also, I don't fall for phishing scams and I don't use the same passwords.

Gmail missing e-mails, login problems, continue into fourth day [Updated] | Technology | Los Angeles Times

never had an issue with my hotmail in the years ive been using it, but i always see an article every month about thousands of accounts with emails disappearing, google banning email accounts they think were hacked (but not), etc etc

Fucking awesome. And I don't even waste my life playing that Team Fortress nerd shit.

Got hacked?

Guess how that happened. You downloaded a RAT or a keylogger. No-ones gonna try to bruteforce a fucking hotmail. That nasty bit of malware is sitting on your PC/Mac recording your every keystroke. If it's a RAT, the dude is watching your screen AND your webcam. He has your passwords, downloaded your homemade porn and the crucial files that determine your online business. He probably has all your important business accounts and running traffic through them for free to his offers.

Don't download anything (not just exes) from dodgy sites and don't visit dodgy sites for fear of drive-by exploits.

largest security mistake SO MANY people these days are making is taking there laptops to starbucks or some shit and logging into one of those routers. i love going into manhattan and seeing HUNDREDS of unsecured wpa/wep routers with and SSID of "FREEWIFI" or "FREE INTERNET" you may as well send your pwds sent out in plaintext.

not sayin you did that...just sayin.

ftw.
