And best commercial goes to...

Maybe we're just disagreeing semantics, but that entire commercial was about the Detroit-ness or American-ness of the car, right? I don't think I associate Detroit with quality automobiles. I could deal with a commercial that is only "Japan-ness" because that says reliability or "German-ness" because that says luxury.

I guess I feel like, because they haven't earned the brand association yet, they should be selling me on the specific benefits rather than brand. Without the specific benefits, and my belief that Detroit isn't a strong brand, the commercial feels to me like an attempt to pull on patriotism.

The feel I got from the commercial was more along the lines of....."Forget what you think you know about automobile manufactuerers - we're a bunch of hardworking, badass motha fuckers who've been to hell and back, we know how to make a fucking car! While the germans are drinking beer and the japanese are eating sushi, we're fucking hustling and now we're back!"

I got that too, and I resent it. You should too.

It's the same marketing message that the Rich Jerk uses.

Worse though, is history doesn't show that the rich jerk was never, ever rich.

LOL resent it? Shouldn't you be studying it instead, I mean, seeing as you and I are internet marketers and all.

The Chrysler 200 better fuckin rape audi and mercedes after a commercial like that.

Sick and tired of reviewers panning American cars.

Now why would I want to study a commercial that I feel infuriates consumers
and won't sell any cars?

Honestly, it's like a multivitamin ad claiming they've been making people immortal since the 1970's...

lol that commercial doesn't infuriate consumers.

Whether or not you personally agree with it's message, I thought it was a brilliantly done commercial. It goes after a consumer base and makes an ad that does a great job of appealing to them.

This one made me LOL

Funny thing is that I (as a German) thought this was a great commercial - for a pickup truck or something along those lines.
Hard - working, the strongest steel, etc... blabla

But didn't you have a nagging memory in the back of your mind that Detroit has never, ever had success in making strong, working cars? It was a blatant lie. Only people too young to remember the resale value of cars made in detroit will ever fall for this crap.

i have to say the little kid dressed as Darth Vader starting the VW. is my favorite by far. I almost pissed myself when i saw it

lol are you kidding me?

I'm not an American car apologist by any stretch, but this just isn't true. Toyota has had massive recalls for defective products, while GM/Ford cars are winning Motortrend awards more often (or at least just as often) as their foreign counterparts.

On top of that there was a time when American cars were synonymous with quality. Only recently has there been this idea that foreign cars (especially cars made in Asia) are better than the US in terms of quality. Before that, Detroit was considered the only place where strong, working cars were being made.

You miss the point of the commercial, it was trying to say that we are going back to the 'good old days' when the US was a manufacturing powerhouse.
That stuff appeals to your blue collar, middle class worker who might be watching the super bowl.

It depends on how you're judging the commercial. Its cool, looks great, and the Eminem appearance is snazzy.

From a marketers perspective It's just another failboat car ad. Is this an ad for Eminems CD? Is this an ad for Detroit somehow? Out of the 2 minute long commercial how often did they show the car? Did they even say anything about the car at all? I see the spin they put on it, but when was the last time you bought an American car just for the fact it was made in America instead of making your purchase decision based on the merits of the car itself?

IDK, Ive never worked at a million dollar ad agency but these are just my thoughts.

Then why do the turn into a pile of dust in a decade? I've got cheap Toyotas older than two generations of my friends american cars...

The whole Toyota recall was COMPLETELY fabricated bullshit. No proof was ever found that a single Toyota crash happened outside the norms. Evil, evil shit.

I've studied Henry Ford and the early industry he created. I see nothing there worth being proud of. -People may have been proud, of course, in the same way a losing football team's truest fans are proud.

Early cars fell apart easily everywhere. The Germans, however, figured out early how to put them together in a way that doesn't fall apart.

The Japanese figured it out too, later.

The US never did. Resale values on 10-year old cars consistantly show this.

Yeah, you're right about that. They'd believe anything.

From what I've been told, There has never really been a solid car come out of Detroit. That's why Japanese cars became so popular in the 70s. They were reliable and more efficient, something the American cars still haven't seem to be able to figure out yet.

From what you've been told? What are you - 12? Japanese cars got popular in the 1970's because they were smaller and more fuel efficient just as the oil shortages hit. You've obviously never owned some real Detroit Muscle before. Of course, check the ratings and you'll see Detroit wins in reliability and fuel efficiency now, but it takes awhile to change perceptions.

I don't think I associate Detroit with quality automobiles. I could deal with a commercial that is only "Japan-ness" because that says reliability or "German-ness" because that says luxury.

I agree with German cars being associated with luxury, but that's a small segment of the market. As far as Japanese cars being associated with reliability - I (and a lot of people) tend to associate them with cars that may or may not stop when you apply the brakes. Good luck with that.

lol what kind of conspiracy theory shit is this? I personally know someone whose accelerator stuck and was in a car accident (twice) due to this, it was a perfectly valid recall.

on top of that, I drove a 1975 Buick LeSabre for years and it was a great, tank of a car. To say that detroit has 'never' made anything of quality is a retarded statement made only by someone who's been brainwashed like a child into thinking that only foreign means quality. Good job falling for marketing though, it shows Japanese automaker marketers did their job on you.

Actually there hasn't been any substantiated evidence that Toyota had any problems with the accelerators. The NHTSA investigated something like 40+ crashes and found they were all driver error: NHTSA toyota report - Google Search

Sorry to burst your bubble PJ, but your friend was well within the norm for mechanical fuckups by any major car manufacturer:

Well, I never say the words "never made anything of quality," -I'm all about the resale value. Can a 10-year old mustang beat the crap out of my 10-year old Camry in a street race? Yes.

IF IT IS STILL RUNNING.
