Anyone else sick of Breast Cancer Awareness already? All this shit with the NFL, pink fucking equipment? Really? One banner or something on the field is enough.

Then every day at work, we have a new breast cancer awareness event. I am fucking sick of it. Not to mention the charity run/walk that will back up traffic this week.

After years and years of promoting awareness, I think women have gotten the message already. Why can't we just have a breast cancer awareness DAY?

Look, I love titties as much as the next guy. Anything we can do to protect them, I'm all for it. But a month of this shit is ridiculous.

Where is prostate cancer awareness month? Everyone should wear brown in April or something.

I commend the NFL for wearing pink for breast cancer awareness. Most companies just put "a banner or something" and call it a day. The message isn't just about getting women aware, its also about soliciting donations for cure etc.

Not sure about your city but where I'm from, the charity run/walks raise millions of dollars for the cause. If it has to inconvenience a couple of whiny sob's to happen, well thats just par for the course.

Do you know how much fucking money has been donated "for a cure"?

Every city has a charity run/walk. Every one generates millions. Think about the amount of money that has been generated in the past 10 years.

Also, I don't even really give that big of a shit about it. I'm just kind of annoyed by the whole thing being shoved down my throat.

(that's what she said)

Also, wow the players are wearing pink gloves, how do I donate all my monies? That really motivates me/makes me aware.

I'm not against the raising of money for causes like this, but what does bother me is that breast cancer always seems to take precedence over other cancers which are equally if not more devastating. I lost 3 members of my family to cancer last year, none of which were breast cancer. Colon cancer, lung cancer and a rare blood cancer called Multiple Myeloma. It pisses me off that you rarely if ever hear much about what's being done for these cancers.

Mortality rates for both cancers are similar (PDF).

My unsupported conspiracy theory:

It is the squeaky wheel syndrome.

Of the men and women I know (young and old, healthy and not, family and otherwise), women go to doctors and trust them far more than men. If men suffer an illness, they are unlikely to make a big deal about it. They get it diagnosed, treated, and move on. Less need for support groups, books, websites, etc. to help men "live with the ordeal." Might have something to do with a man's tendency to look for new problems to solve.

Women go through an entirely different experience.

Someone in my family has gone through breast cancer. She was told over and over by the healthcare community how the rest of her life will be defined by her breast cancer, even though she survived it. She looked for books, support groups, and spent a lot of time with other women who had survived breast cancer. Was even encouraged to speak to women who were going through it.

Women make a bigger deal of breast cancer than men make of prostate cancer, even though the mortality rates are similar.

Again, it's the squeaky wheel syndrome. The more awareness that can be drummed up through marketing and PR, the more federal/state funding available. Companies and organizations jump on the bandwagon to build their brands. Who can possibly look bad for wanting to save boobs? Boob love is universal. It doesn't matter if you're male, female, gay or otherwise.

The prostate lacks the same appeal. So, it lacks the same backing. Less marketing, less PR, less awareness, and less funding.

Result: No "Save The Prostate" month.

* There are a few logical fallacies in this post.

What I'm tired of is all the fucking support with nothing to show for it.

What you get as a cancer patient is guesswork at best.

Billions of dollars in support and the best we can do isn't really any better than it was years ago.

It's because there's very limited impetus to deliver results on federal/state funding. Kinda like NASA.

Exactly.

So what exactly is your point op? A lot of money has been donated over many years but there is no cure. Should everybody just pack up all the pink and go away so as to not continue to "shove it down your throat"?

Or maybe, they should keep doing more. More parades, more donations, more awareness events. Hmm I dunno.

I hope you don't give a big shit about it because what you're ranting about is downright silly when you think of it.

Boo hoo, the NFL is wearing pink this month.
Oh no, can't go into the break room at work - might see another breast cancer poster.
Damn, gotta make a detour today because there is a charity run/walk on my regular route.

Oh how inconvenient!

While you were busy complaining about those very trivial issues, somebody lost their mom, wife or sister to a very major one. If people like you have to be annoyed until they find a way to prevent shit like this happening, oh well. I'd say its worth it.

The point is I wanted to vent about it because it pisses me off. Don't know why that's hard to understand.

As others have said, there are many different types of cancer, but none get as much pub as breast cancer.

I didn't want to start this debate, but do you think they would really announce that they found a cure? No, they make way too much fucking money selling drugs and therapy that deal with the symptoms of cancer.

How much money needs to be donated? 50 million? 100 million? How many fucking lab rats can 100 million dollars buy? Why does research cost so much? Nobody knows how this money is being spent. Can you tell me how the money gets split up, fucknut? It goes to "research", well that might help you sleep better at night. How about the money goes to the actual SURVIVORS of cancer who have to pay for therapy?

I think it's annoying that NFL teams dedicate an entire month to wearing pink etc. It's a fucking opinion, get off your high horse. If we can't rant about things on the internet, what's the point?

Charities have to show that they are making efforts in fundraising to keep and get funding from other sources, its something they have to do. Whilst I don't largely agree with big charities (I'm fairly sure a lot of them make a lot of profit for a non-profit organisation) I do commend the effort. Cancer is truly devastating and honestly I don't mind what type they make people aware of as long as people are aware of it and as best prepared they can be should it happen to them or a family member.

First its just a rant. Then you don't really give a shit about it. Now it actually pisses you off. Make up your mind dude.

Being pissed that other cancers don't get as much attention = real issue.
Being pissed because your favorite nfl team has a bit of pink on = trivial issue.

I'm not on a high horse. WF isn't your personal blog. Its a fucking forum. You spoke your opinion and I spoke mine. If we can't rant about somebody else's rant on the internet, what's the point?

The part that annoys me the most is that upwards of 80% or more of monies donated to charities are eaten up by the costs associated with the solicitation, collection and distribution process. "Non-profit" is utter bullshit on so many levels.

You couldn't dispute any of my arguments, so you resort to semantics. Go troll somewhere else.

Agreed. Not to mention we don't really see what they do with the money. Unless I'm missing something. I'd rather my money go straight to the pockets of survivors to help pay for treatment.

Some charities are good, but some are pretty awful. More people should research efficiency before they give if they're concerned about where their dollars go.

I dispute arguments as I see fit. I've already dismissed you as a whiny bitch with more sand in his mangina then smarts so I acted accordingly.

Enjoy the rest of your breast cancer awareness month though...

Not getting in on this argument...but..

The pink equipment was all auctioned off after the game, as game worn items.

Hence, donations flooded in as men simply cannot resist owning something with another man's sweat all over it.
