O.K. in my defense I had a few to many the other night. We had a few people over and I drank rum and cokes through 2 games of Monopoly (you know how long they take).

During the first game (before we sent them to bed) my kids told me I was lazy because all I did for "work" was sit in front of the computer all day. I reminded them that I could go to "work" for someone else and make a percentage of what we do now and get all their clothes at yard sales so they shut up.... :)

After our friends left I came in here and started thinking about all the things I do in the course of a day. The amount of knowledge and practice it takes to do what we do and succeed is immense.

Now mind you I was drunk, and had just stomped everyone in Monopoly so was in the midst of a mini god complex and able to compare myself with Leonardo and Benjamin Franklin.

Ended up with this: You are a Universal Man! | Black Hat SEO Digest

Sober - I still think I'm right. What do you think? Are you exceptional compared to all the sheep in the world? How do you view what you've learned to do what you do?

You would think a Renaissance Man wouldn't make this mistake -

But hey – how often do you think Benjamin Franklin showered while he was making all those light bulbs?

Love it!

Add everything you mentioned to the Real Estate industry, where dinosaurs still roam, and you'll know how I feel. I'm lucky to have landed at one of the top "tech savvy" brokerages in the country. We have an in house WordPress development and design company, making other brokerages look like the black tar pits.

2011 is already off to an amazing start, and it'll only get better from here.

Awesome post and I agree with your theory. I've always felt that I needed to learn as much as possible. I started picking a subject every monday and I buy a book or download one, find videos, and find a few sites dedicated to it and study it.

How old are your children?

Renaissance scammers maybe, we revolutionize electronic money theft though inglorious and deceptive marketing tactics. (the one's making dat renaissance money, that is)

Vive la Internet Age.

I can only count on both my hands the number of people I have met like me that can:

1. Code scripting langs like PHP or Perl/Ruby/Python
2. Write Sales Copy and split test
3. Write HTML and CSS and JS
4. Photoshop or graphics
5. Make deals for insertion orders, etc
6. Handle cash flow
7. Diversify
8. research/spy

However, I know a lot of people doing affiliate marketing knowing exactly 0% about 7 out of the 8 above. So crazy.

We don't all have your business model. Mine actually does benefit everyone involved.

To the OP: Not a bad thought, and I'd always considered myself a Renaissance man since I was a kid... & absolutely couldn't pick a major in college because of it. ;)

However, flattery will get you nowhere; this thread is quite deliberate self promotion of your latest blog post. :batman:

Yes - I really really needed the 68 visitors from wickedfire ((I had to go check my referrers for that one.)

You caught me :)

Actually I expected to get flamed, beaten into submission, and have me stuffed into a girlscout uniform and given to Chris :)

Not my normal writing style, topic, etc.. Where else but where I hang out 'on-line' would I go to see if others agreed with me?

Well, we're assholes, anyways.
Great post, but you prolly shouldn't be drinking around a keyboard, Ed :)

But I'd be interested to see pics of the Girl Scout Uniform thingy if you and Chris can get it together (strictly for lulz, /homo of course).

yeah I'd consider myself one, but I don't talk about it much since I don't like to brag.

1. Physics degree..strong in math
2. Compsci minor, can code C, C++, php
3. Good with photoshop
4. Logical reasoning and critical thinking
5. Musician, play multiple instruments (brass, percussion, keyboard), one in an orchestra
6. Compose music
7. At peak maxed out 270lb bench, 1000lb legpress
8. Good with people and sales
9. Good at menial bullshit trivia
10. Info and data analysis
11. good with handyman type work

/bragging, but I guess I fall in that category

I've found that most people fall into the graphics or code category so someone who is a good coder is generally pretty bad at graphic design and vice versa. Doing all of the above well? If you say you know less than 10 people, you probably know all the people in the world.

To the OP: I mostly agree, except for the bit about knowing the latest in world events. I'd say if you spend your time reading about world events, you're wasting it (then again, I could say the same about this post ...)

A lot of the skills you pick up are dependent on the hobbies you get into. I did programming when I was a teenager, so I learned to program C, the fundamentals of which carries into most modern languages. I got into photography (small, medium & large format), did some house renos and eventually built my own house, tried scuba and got all the training including trimix, go cycling, trained in wing chun, go to the gym, learned to cook, etc. etc. Doesn't mean I'm a Renaissance man, just means I get out of the house when I can and like to learn new skills. I'm sure anyone here of a similar age could build a similar list.

btw to papajohn56: Why legpress? Anyone who has spent any time in the gym knows to stay away from that machine and do the proper exercise (squat).

i hate to get srs but i'd put money on the fact that there is probably nobody in our industry that can even stand in the mighty ben franklins shadow

consider the scientific discoveries he made...coupled with his self-made millionaire status on top of his political achievements (his diplomacy practically saved americas ass from the british) and you have one helluva guy not even epic beard man can be compared to

the world just doesnt make polymaths anymore, thats the sad truth

and if you think you are a renissance man because you can code in php while creating $5 logos on a separate monitor...well...lol...

// Agree: (really I do)

Most people in our industry don't compare with Franklin. He's an amazing man who made some money, and helped shaped our country.

//Disagree (because really I do)

O.K. I think I can argue that point. Do you think Microsoft has changed the world?

Google's assistance in spreading/archiving knowledge?

Paypals changing the the ability for the "little man" to increase his earning potential and change his life?

Those three examples are of businesses founded by men - so maybe they aren't the best example... what did the "MEN" do who founded those companies?

The advances in space travel we are about to see in regards to commercial space flight - check out Elon Musk for example. I'd actually say that Musk qualifies the best out of any example I can think of.

Gates turned his windfall from Microsoft into the Gates Foundation: The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Google as far as I know only does a small bit of charity, or research outside their core business. Google.org - Google Technology-Driven Philanthropy . So this is probably the worst example. I'm having a forum discussion so I'm not going to go hunting for what the actual founders of Google do as a hobby to change the world if anything :)

Beyond those three companies and men a lot of what's happening on-line is changing the world.

Several social networks are helping reshape world politics. Twitter, facebook (and even google) are driving political revolution in many countries for example.

I don't think these guys compare to Ben Franklin - or many other famous people in history. Give it 50 years and hind sight and maybe they will.

I don't think the guy making 5 dollar logos and writing 'hello world' programs is a polymath either.

If he is learning, studying, etc.. well that's a different story. Constant learning, and striving to figure out new things - that's what in the end makes a polymath. He might not be there, he might never be there, or he might be the next Elon Musk.

As another example I've seen threads here with people wanting to go back to school for different things - just because they want to learn. Most of us didn't start out working on-line.

I've got an education degree, learned two trades outside of "on-line". Hell I was a plumber for 10 years because I enjoyed it (at least more than teaching).

And I keep learning every day. I still go to college just because I want to keep learning new things, read a book every day/other day. Hell I'm getting ready to learn blacksmithing just because it looks cool and there is a apprenticeship program here. I don't see myself stopping any time soon.

My guess is that MOST of the people making it in our industry are the same way. I'm not talking about just making some "BERRIES MONIES". I mean long term income outside of just PPC.

I know lots of successful people that haven't read anything other than the sports pages in the paper for years. Don't care to learn anything outside their specialty, etc... Doctors don't read much on physics, archeology, etc..

Guess that's the point - by nature what we do invites us to keep learning, rewards us for doing so, and encourages us to be more than just a cog in the machine.

No I'm not talking about just throwing up a lander someone else designed and dumping money in ppc or firing up paint shop pro to make a logo on fiverr.

If that's all you think about - you don't know many of the exceptional people on just this forum. I was being a smart ass when I said you 'ass holes are amazing', but there are a few people on here that are too damn smart for their own good and have a lot of accomplishments.... they should be proud and shouldn't be lumped in with the guy making 5 dollar logos on fiverr. They don't speak up often because there are 90 times more that are ODing on red bull, hung over, and wondering where to get a hit of xyz instead of thinking about anything bigger.

Now I'm done - said my piece and I've got a date with ChriSs - found that GS uniform :)
