Yahoo in talks to buy Tumblr

WSJ reporting that Yahoo's board has approved a deal for 1.1 billion. It will be interesting to see how they plan to monetize Tumblr assuming the deal goes through, but I can't imagine this working out well for Y!.

Tumblr is full of everything that most big advertisers don't want to be associated with (porn, self mutilation, complete user control). Get rid of that stuff and they'll lose a ton of users, keep it and they are incredibly limited as far as advertisers go. Unless they're planning on monetizing it some other way, I just don't see how they're going to make this work. If it doesn't, it's probably the beginning of the end for Mayer as CEO.

How does Yahoo have money?

They sell in-content links in Yahoo! News articles.

It is an urban legend that using soap while executing this sexual position mitigates the risk of HIV transmission between women.

Thinking about this...

It's a horrible move.

A good % people on Tumblr run Google Adsense Ads, lol..

What are they going to do just remove them? Or switch them out with their own ads, on what millions of pages? And since everything is usually a custom theme, how do they plan to do that?

......

Just seems like Yahoo needs to focus on their OWN site first before trying to buy other ones..

It sounds like it's a done deal, but I haven't heard if Tumblr has accepted it or not.

The price seems low to me.

Tumblr has a shit load of traffic.

It would be a great buy for Yahoo or anyone really..

Except most of their users are nothing but window shoppers who are posting cat pictures, porn, or otherwise not interested in commercialization. There's money to be made on Tumblr, but I don't think Yahoo is savvy enough to capitalize.

They could go full Squidoo style and team with Amazon, Google would hate that. And all the ousted, soulless Squidoo sweatshop workers could find a new master. But they won't, they'll try to do it on their own. Failure to learn from past mistakes makes them want to reinvent everything "now with a twist" too bad that crappy concepts have them twisting 180 and grabbing their ankles. Silly yahoo.

I don't know how Yahoo justifies $1.1 billion on the cat/porn traffic either, not saying they can't - just saying I can't see how.

On a more personal level, Suddenly_Ass is Suddenly_Marissa's now.

New business plan.

1. See what Yahoo buys
2. Copy business Yahoo has just bought
3. Launch your copy of original
4. Watch Yahoo add their magic to their version
5. Watch as Yahoo version starts to crumble
6. Watch Yahoo close the business and your competition down
4. ????
5. Profit

Yahoo, Tumblr deal a play for young, mobile users - CBS News

They're aquiring users from demographics that they've had the most trouble with getting to Yahoo pages in recent years (relative to the total amount of users in those demographics).

I don't know if they can make a profit on the purchase, but this is a fast way to greatly increase their unique visitor count and to give the impression to stock buyers that Yahoo is part of the future.
