I'll just list you a bunch of random advice that will help get you started.

Eat clean and lift heavy. Try to cut out alcohol completely. Cut out most sugar and refined flours if possible. You can have cheat meals once in awhile to stay sane.

Diet dictates everything. You must somehow calculate and determine your Maintenance calories, which is the amount of calories you must eat in a day to maintain your current weight. Eat at a 500 calorie deficit if you want to lose fat. Eat an additional 500 calories to your maintenance if you want to build muscle. Note that your maintenance will increase or decrease as you build or lose muscle. There are online calculators that can help you find your estimated maintenance.

Everyday, for your diet, try to consume 1g of protein per pound of lean body mass that you have. So, if you are 150 pounds at 20% bodyfat, try to eat around 120 grams of protein a day. There are devices you can buy to calculate your bodyfat.

The only supplement that really helps with strength gains is Creatine Monohydrate. Also as a plus, this supplement is really accessible and cheap. Be sure to drink plenty of water if you take creatine.

Whey protein is useful, too, if you need a quick protein meal. Whey is great when you don't have much time to cook, but you can get the same protein eating whole foods.

Unsweetened, black coffee is good as a pre-workout supplement. Both coffee and green tea helps increase your metabolism. Mega-multivitamins are good if you are not getting enough nutrients from whole foods.

Never buy anything from GNC. They highly overprice everything.

For simplicity, I recommend doing the big 4 compound exercises to build muscle all over. Squats, deadlifts, bench presses, overhead presses. Why? Because it's only 4 you have to keep track off, making it easy to remember. Be sure to watch some YouTube vids or get someone to teach you proper form. You ALWAYS want to do everything in proper form to avoid injury.

When doing exercises, lift a proper amount of weight that allows you to do 8-12 reps. If you can't do more than 7, the weight is too high. If you can do more than 12, it's too easy.

You don't need cardio. It will help if you are trying to cut body fat, though.

I'll leave it at that for now. I just want to remind you that muscles are built mostly by EATING. If you are lifting heavy, but are not eating at a caloric surplus, then you CANNOT build muscle. Lifting heavy and eating at maintenance will only maintain your current muscles. A caloric deficit can even decrease your strength. You will notice this when you hit a plateau and won't be able to increase the weights that you are lifting.

PM me for a link to a free e-book I helped write (it's someone else's plan). I don't push links here but the plan has been great for me. Put on 7lbs of muscle in 2 months.

It also basically hand-holds you with the diet and training so you don't ever have a day where you don't know what to do.

It's a bodybuilder style routine with lots of eggs though, so be warned. Some people substitute in other protein sources but eggs and sweet potato/yams are the shiiiit.

I've been doing crossfit for a while and I love it. You may look for a box (gym) near you.
