Would have been funny if someone yelled "Shoe Bomb!"

^^ you're an asshole

lemme guess, male Caucasian, mid to late 30's, rural West Virginia, am I close?

I just don't get Arabs. You can rape their 8 year old daughters and wives in front of them. You can cut out their tounges and kill their familys in front of their eyes. You can tourture, rape, kill and mutilate them by the millions and they will kiss your feet.

Yet, If you are the person responsible for taking those murderers out of power............they throw shoes at you.

guess it's just a cultural thing?

That's wrong, you're so ignorant. You think Bush have spread happiness and prosperity to Iraq? There has been much death and suffering because of that twat. Hoped that shoe did land on his face.

I'm not saying we had the right reasons for being there but

In Iraqi culture, throwing shoes at someone is a sign of contempt. When U.S. Marines toppled Saddam Hussein's statue on Firdos Square in 2003, the assembled crowd whacked it with their shoes.

You would think they would be thankful for someone taking those dogs out of power.

The first thing I thought when I saw that was... "Wait, where are the Secret Service?! Oh my gosh, did he just lob a second shoe? Where in the heck are the agents?"

Maybe I've seen too many movies.

I remember in the 80's when That One Guy (can't remember his name) tried to put a bullet into Reagan. Now, those agents were quick.

exactly, even the PM next to him didn't flinch. Everyone acted as if they knew it was coming.

Those "dogs" made Iraq one of the most technologically advanced and prosperous countries in the area, and suppressed a minority group that no one liked and didn't actually recognise as part of their own anyway (the Kurds, which the rest of the world recognise as being Iraqi, were the ones that were usually under the boot heel).
Think about it from their perspective for a second. Everything's going good. You're living in one of the few countries that isn't Israel that doesn't force you to be an observant Muslim (Saddam himself was pretty non-observant, a rarity in the region), and your cultural enemies are being pretty well trodden all over. What's more, there's state dental cover (even if it's bad). Life is great! Thank Allah! Sure, you can't get a Playstation or a Mac computer, but there's food on the table, a steady job, and steady electricity and water, and you've got a sweet little apartment on the lower side of the Tigris river.
Nice modern city. Looks kinda nice like this:

And then comes shock and awe... And Auntie Amachmed just got killed. And all the doctors and engineers and other people with skills are getting the fuck out of the country. And there's a 6 hour wait for basic staples. And there are now terrorists all over the place blowing shit up in what used to be a CBD are full of nice glass fronted buildings and kava houses. Your favourite felafel stand guy got shot in the head at a checkpoint because they thought his cart was a bomb. And half your city's best real estate is now taken up by a "green zone" which is a large concrete walled monstrosity that has some of the best of the best in it, while you're hoping your kids live through their school day.

I'm not saying Iraq was a perfect wonderland. But for the average Mohammed Schlubfarzel, things WERE better under Saddam than they currently are.
Give it ten years, and I'm sure things will be abck the way they were with a nice corrupt Chicago style democracy in place. But before then, you've got about 15 years of wondering if the guy in front of you is getting all that petrol to make a bomb, or his just got another car at home.

Fuck, some people would probably not feel so bad if the US Gov admitted it was a fuck up, it was based on lies, and that the oil and reconstruction bonanza was what it was all about.

Back to the shoes...

I get the feeling that this is not going to be the last of people attempting to publicly humiliate Bush.
He's no longer a worthwhile assassination target, so it actually makes MORE of a statement to simply ridicule him.
I'm thinking he'll probably get pied somewhere in Europe.

I am with you man. They also set Saddam up. They were the ones saying its ok to for him to attack Kuwait to reclaim it saying that they won't interfere. Next they supplied him weapons, and then after 911 looked for "weapons of mass destruction".

That sums up perfectly a lot of the main reasons why there are days I hate my day job. +Rep

This makes me mad.:angryfire: You Americans who are happy about this ought to be ashamed of yourselves! You may not have voted for "W", but he is still your President. When that nutcase threw the shoes at the President, he was throwing shoes at all Americans. ...And people are making "ole shoe flinger" a hero over there. What an ungrateful bunch.

Rev up the Enola Gay.:angryfire:

Sorry to take this off-track again, but I just read that Bush told a journalist that he "saw into his attacker's sole" (referring to his original flub on Putin's soul).

Say what you will about the guy, but he's funny.

I've read a few essays written by journalists who worked the House beat for years. All of them said the same thing... "everyone loves the guy."

I know that has absolutely nothing to do with domestic and foreign policy. But, c'mon... "saw into his attacker's sole." Not bad.

Dickerson at Slate had an interesting comment. He mentioned that having the shoes thrown at him might have a positive effect on public perception of Bush.

From Dickerson's article (albeit, out of context)...

"Hey, you can't throw shoes at our president, they might say. Only we can throw shoes at our president. This may test Nixon's theory that presidents benefit from rough treatment by journalists."

Like one generalization makes another one right?

I guess by that logic we can say all Iraqis are sadist like Saddam he was after all their former leader. :crap:

Wow! I never thought I would hear someone taking up for Sadamn outside the Baath patry (and they did out of fear for their life). I bet the millions he raped, tourted and murdered would have a different view than you sitting in your house relatively free from fear of your government.

I have seen the horrors of his regime first hand and you sir are ignorant of the facts. No one was safe and all lived in terror.

The left fringe of today's America wish for us to fail. They have been fed leftest propaganda until it is comming out thier ass. They have never had to sacrifice anything.

They are ignorant of the facts because they are not objective and recieve their "news" from the cartoon network.

They are weak, cowards that think the grass is greener on the other side. When America fails because of thier ideology they will be the first to cry for Amercia to come to their aid.

They claim to be accepting of all races and ideas, yet they are the first to scream out against anything or anyone that is different than their ideas.

They are nothing but spoiled, pampered, impotent modern day hippies. They are a minority but people listen to them because they are a bunch of fuckin rude, loud mouth children that won't shut the fuck up unless you acknowledge their ignorant "Cobert" rants.
