working at home v.s. working in office

I work from a proper office - WAY more productive. As soon as I enter the office I am in the work mode.
 


Get an office, working at home has a hobby feel to it. Like many others have said your productivity is likely to increase. Also gets you out the house, people going to think you're some kind of recluse.
 
I used to work in an office and it got tedious after a while. I figured it would be more efficient if I didn't have to travel and drop dollaz on office space so I optimized my productivity at home instead. A few things that worked for me:

* Having a visual reminder of the outside world viewable from your desk, like a window with a nice view, or a big scenic picture on the wall
* Taking frequent breaks - standing up from the desk, walk around, once in a while do light exercise like a couple of pushups to get the blood flowing
* Being interruption-proof - My home office door has a bolt, if anyone needs to interrupt me they better have a battering ram. I also turn off my cellphone during work time.
 
Working from home is fine for me, probably because I live by myself. If my gf moved in, that would probably slow things down. For those of you who have families, I definitely understand why you would want to rent a space or go to a coffee shop to work.

Yeah, productivity has tripled (easily) for me when I got into that. It wasn't the atmosphere necessarily that changed me, but rather being around other people. When I consider slacking off and look around at others getting shit done, I just get back into it.

Plus it helps a lot when you need a 2nd or 3rd opinion on something and the people actually have half a brain.

I feel the same way in those type of locations, I don't know why, it's probably the aura of people being busy, and doing, doing, doing, rather than having no one around you and you get to relax if you let your mind wander for .5 of a second.
 
I find working from home to be more productive. I actually think there are more distractions in an office. Never tried a coffee shop, but might try that. Or even the backyard.
 
Oh yeah, this is HUGE.

I am now working from my office and I think this is one of the best decisions I've ever made in my IM career :)
 
yeah i can vouch, i can't work at home. I go to by college library everyday and work like nuts.
 
I have the childcare responsibilities, and I only write part-time after teaching full-time, so I'm at home. No sense in getting an office to work evenings and nights. What does work for me is that my time is so regimented thanks to the insane schedule - I only do "real" work after 8 pm when the kids are in bed. By then, having a dedicated office space in my house - soon to be a full library - is awesome. I've found having less time in the day makes me more productive during that dedicated time - no time to goof off, really.

Sometimes I'll use my laptop and a drop cord though. Shown here in this picture below is my AlphaSmart Dana, best $35 I ever spent. I have a Dana, too, and I love it - although I haven't used it recently. I should break it out back out and use it more often. That outside set-up is nice, although I'm going to guess you're not working outside in July in Texas. LOL!
 
Home if you can really focus.
Office is better for me because I can focus at the task at hand. Also motivates me to get things done quick so I can leave the office lol.
 
I looked up some places and not bad $400 for under 400 sq ft. but I still think that thats small but I will try to find a college library or something.
