Work at home truth - the oatmeal

Well I always make sure to have one meal out per day or every second day, and I do go out on the weekends as well.

But yeah try to pull of a minimum of 4-5 meals with other people...

socially working for yourself is grand. just ring up some unemployed mates when you're bored lol.

it's the distractions bit that he's right about. and he should have added the security of a constant paycheque in the office job.

I have no choice but to work at home. I can't get up any earlier than 3:00pm. If I go on a "normal" schedule for more than a week it really fucks me up. Also, I don't drive. I call a taxi whenever I need to go somewhere or do something. And I would go fucking insane if I had to get a real job. High school almost killed me (mostly because of the schedule) and a real job would be even worse I think.

My schedule is go to bed at 4-6AM and wake up 2PM. But damn, I can't see doing that everyday, I'm just going that cause its summer, but once school starts where my schedule will resume. But yah, my schedule is still pretty messed during school cause I don't do anywork till the last day or two before its due so I pile up something like 8-10 hours of homework for one night so I'm up till like 4AM and have to get up at like 7:30. Then on all the other days I'm still up till like 2 watching beaking bad or something.

This actually makes a lot of sense.

I'll def start doing this. Another thing to do would be join a sports club or something.

Thing is, we need to consciously handle this part of our lives while other people have it sorted out automatically.

I'm fortunate because I actually own a home based BUSINESS. I just do IM on the side (though I'm hoping to eventually take it on full time). Because of this, I'm able to see and talk to a lot of different people every day. As for friends/social life though, nope. I don't really have either. But at least having clients coming in and out keeps me showered and looking presentable most of the time. Though to be honest I really don't think I'd go too crazy not seeing or talking to anyone for months or years at a time. People are generally dicks anyway.

Yes I do get bored working alone at home and some times its kind of depressing with no friends around, but then again I call my friends home, meet them at weekends and have fun.

So all is good, If you quit your job in frustration to work from home and if you still can't be happy then I don't think anyone can really help. It's all about the motivation and the focus that keeps us going.

My schedule sux too. I usually get up by 10 am, then drop kid to school. come back home and start working. then after lunch, i take break till about 4:30 PM and then start again till about 3 AM. Just started going for a walk in the evening just to meet a few people and keep myself active or else this lifestyle will fuck up with my health someday.

Guys, its about time we start to relax and stay active socially/mentally

I actually don't think this is accurate at all. It's up to you to craft your life the way you want it, isn't that why a lot of us want to work for ourselves in the first place? If you decide you want to go to the beach in the middle of the day on Tuesday, fuck it, do it. You can work a few hrs later, or on a Saturday etc. I love the autonomy of not having to answer to anyone.

When I first started, I was working really late and sleeping really late and came to the realization that I was missing out on one of the huge benefits of working for myself. Now I'm up at 7am, work hard and try and break it up with stuff people in the grind of an office environment can't do. I'll admit, the social part is sort of lacking, but the friends I've made online pretty much make up for any office interaction I used to have.

well I agree. sometimes I feel its good but the same time I think I'm less social. even sometimes I don't get time to talk with family and enjoy the moments that never comes again.

I'm 2 Year and few months old in IM and I think it changed my overall personality. now I can't imagine how I ll perform if I need to do a 9-5 job lol

Wtf, people??? Isn't the freedom why you guys quit your 9-5's?? And now, you talk about lacking in your social life?? Is that why you need 9-5, for social interactions? I don't get it.

I, too, work crazy hours. While I work most people I know sleep, and they wonder all the time how the hell I function. We are definitely not on the same time zone, but common, that doesn't mean I should just give up on my social life. I go out almost every day, if I want a beach in the middle of a day, I do it! If I wanna eat out or cook for friends, I do it. That's the beauty of working for yourself.

Many, many people I know are totally miserable with their work, and that doesn't help their social life, cause they come home dead tired, nervous and frustrated. The circle never stops. They do have that social interation around the office, but is that really a social life you are talking about! Really??

Sleep till afternoon, finish up your work, and go out meet people and interact. Use the freedom and money you are blessed to have, to make your life better, not feel lonely.
You choose your way and you have much better options then majority of people. Use it!!
