Why Win 7 is better than XP?

The Kernels have basically remained the same though....

While they may be largely the same there are drastic differences in the areas that count. Speed, stability, hardware support, security, error handling, etc.. I hate windows but 7 is real nice compared to XP.

For all you Win7 adopters. I've been on XP Pro for a while but the RAM limit is starting to get to me. I run a lot of tabs and they just suck that stuff up. My dilemma right now...

I've got a 64bit capable processor but currently running a 32bit WinXP Pro.

It seems that the only way to go from 32bit to 64 bit is with a clean install from what I'm reading. I really don't want to do a clean install and re-install everything. Are there any ways around this? I could upgrade to Win7 32bit but then that seems pointless since you are still limited to 4GB RAM.

So why not just do a fresh install with Windows 7 64 bit? The benefits outweigh the suffering.

Getting all my workhorse apps freshly installed from XP to Win7 from a clean install took me about a day, and then over the next week or two I got the other bits and pieces installed as I needed them. As long as you're thorough with backing all your shit up (which you should be doing anyway) and saving config files, emails, bookmarks, etc. it's really not that big a deal.

The easiest way to go about this is by starting with a new clean drive, preferably SSD, and copy your shit over from the old one once up and running.

Slurp your current XP into a virtual machine, use that as you gradually transition.

Hello HBDC

Posting in a Windows thread where Dchuck doesn't mention OSX.

But yeah, when working in Windows I've been running 7 for years. XP looks and feels ancient to me. The hardware I'm running is light-years ahead of my old XP laptop too, but I see zero reasons to ever go back to XP.

Windows ME checking in

OMFG!!!

Windows MALICIOUS EDITION!!!

That was the WORST piece of SHIT!!!

I actually met the Lead Designer of that MESS!! It was his "Baby" as he called it!! I told him that it should have been ABORTED!!!

By the time I was done BITCHING about the WASTE of Money and TIME I had spent on that thing and sticking with XP 64 he actually "gave" me a Microsoft Store FULL version of Vista Ultimate x86 & x64 to try and make up for it. Lulz

But....of course Vista was SHIT TOO!!! Windows Explorer would CONSTANTLY Lockup-Restart--Lockup--Restart!!

I went BACK to XP 64 again. (Which was actually pretty much the same as Windows Server 2003 so it was pretty secure.)

Win7 came out and I've been quite happy with it ever since.

I'm running Win 8 in a VM Machine to see hpw it does there before I put into one of my live physical boxes.

So far, it seems to be a little FASTER than Win 7 for most things. I might move up if it proves out.

Win 8 is faster, for sure. If you download one of those start menu apps like Classic Shell, it's not a bad OS. But if you're stuck with their bullshit start menu, get ready to wear some carpal tunnel wristbands. More mouse moves to run shit than bailing out on porn when the wife gets home!

Give this a shot: Physical Address Extension (Windows)

Your 32 bit OS/System CAN access more than 4 GB of RAM if your CPU can support it.

This guy proves it on his Linux system but also gives the link I gave you above for people with Windows.

Classic Shell is what I'm using in my VM Win 8.

I like it better than the other ones out there that are FREE. Lulz

It has TONS of options you can configure.

Windows 7 is better, one of the reassons is thet win7 reconized a lot more drivers than winXP

I'm a manager at my local computer shop. My advice: Stay with 7; it's stable and efficient. Windows 8 is cool -- for tablets & phones that is. Using it with a keyboard/mouse is just insanity! Windows XP was great and still is a great os, we sell a lot of refurbished business class systems with XP for general use computers. But for more intensive use like us IM do - 7 > XP > 8.

Windows 7 is the only Windows I've ever used and not had to think about using so to speak. Which is great if you're not into tweaking stuff. No blue screen of death one year in and very few issues alltogether. Add Norton anti-virus and everything just runs smoothly.

Yeah, I just got my dad a new PC with Windows 8 on it, that was his verdict as well. I think I'll stick for now.

You might consider getting yourself setup so you can do clean installs whenever needed. An easy solution is to back up all your important files to Google Drive, that way you don't even have to worry about an external drive failing.

Why is it insanity? You open the start menu and you click on shit just like you always have. You can show all your programs like you always have. You can search like you always have. It just looks different. I personally prefer the flat Win 8 interface over 7's. You do not have to use the "apps", you can run programs from the desktop like you always have.

What's the problem exactly?

For us tech savy people? Nothing. For the average person = everything. I'm aware that everything is still accessible :) The problem is people don't like change. Most of the customers I work for are 30-60 year old average folks. Is windows 8 hip? Yes. Is it for everyone? Whoa. no way! The customers I help are great people who just use their computers for day-to-day stuff like internet browsing & word processing. The problem is that it's so inherently different that they don't even feel like they are on a PC anymore :/

First time I used it.. absolutely hated it! I honestly still don't like it. I will probably be using Windows 7 for atleast a couple more years until it doesn't support everything I need it to.
