Always.

Another benefit of it is that registrars can't send you physical mail asking you to move over to them. I got those all the time add my old place and when I have 30+ domains registered without privacy.

Had a few of those letters will not be making that mistake again "your domain name is set to expire" (in 21 months?) ha ha.

Only reason to use private registration is to avoid spam in regular paper mail. It is not protecting from detection of your site if someone really wants to do so.
P.S. 1and1 is $7 now.

If you felt so inclined, couldn't you just register the site with bogus or incomplete information? Assuming you weren't using NameCheap and you wanted to avoid the extra fee for private registration.

Causes problems if you want to hold the names long term, especially in the event of a UDRP. For spam domains, this works fine.

In the long run your privacy doesn't matter.

Domain Tools: Whois Lookup and Domain Suggestions

All you need to do is go to a "registrant search" and search for a name.

If you don't believe how accurate this is, it doesn't matter if your domain is "who is protected".

Check this out:

Free Registrant Search

You can get your own results of all your domains with your first/last name for free. Doens't make a difference if your domains are "whois protected" or not.

You are 100% wrong. Domain Tools just crawls and stores logs of the whois database. If names have never had public whois, they will never show up in a Domain Tools scan. You are completely incorrect on this.

Really?

Did you check it for youself?

Since I did. I went in and signed up for an account, verified my e-mail. Went to the "registrar search" , typed in my full first name and last name. After the search appeared 39 domains. I went and ordered the report since you can order your own FREE domain reports if your e-mail is verified.

What showed up?

Everything Including domains that I had a "whois privacy" with namecheap.
If you don't think their service is accurate do a google search on them. There's people questioning if their service is ethical.

Just follow the links I included above, it won't cost you anything. I'll bet you will be damn surprised. I was.

You are wrong. Your names must have not had privacy on them for their life time, or something else in your test is wrong.

There is a fundamental misunderstanding about how the whois database works in your assertions. If you sign up at a registrar with privacy, the registry database never even sees your data. It's not like they are hiding it somewhere and this tool manages to find it. If you use privacy, the registry never even knows your name. You are just wrong.

Yes, you are right I am wrong. Don't check for yourself. I am just wrong. Namecheap.com does not offer FREE whois privacy (1yr), right? Nobody else knows about that secret except for me.

Sleep well tonight knowing that I am just wrong. I am just wrong. You don't have to check for yourself (even when it won't cost you anything).

I'm not the only person here who can vouch for domaintools.com

Check with your homeboy uberaffiliate.com he'll let you know about domaintools.com

I buy and sell domain names for a living. I'm pretty sure I would know how Domain Tools works.

The capabilities of their tools make a lot more sense if you gain an understanding of the .com whois database. Domain Tools has no more access than any other Tom, Dick, or Harry with a direct query to whois. The only difference is that Domain Tools has been logging all of their query info for ~6 years. So, for example, they can do a whois history search by looking at their own company database on one domain over previous queries. Also, they can scan their database for all domains owned by a certain company name or email. They can not, however, pull any information out of whois that whois does not have publicly available.

So, I will repeat, if your names have whois privacy from the time of registration, the registry has no idea what your personal information is. As such, it is not available in the whois database, and not available in any Domain Tools search. I hope this makes things easier for you to understand.

I'll sleep well tonight I educated another domain noob while watching my parking stats running up.

I'm going to PM you right now with my website that is whois protected by namecheap. Then I will email you a screenshot from a domaintools search results and you let me know. I will however block out parts of the search results such as last name, street name, and zip code.

Actually nevermind I don't care if you don't believe me. I don't have anything prove. It's not like it's my company or an affiliate link I'm trying to promote.

I just don't want to give out my domains like that.

I wasn't trying to say that if you search for a domain that you will get their personal "whois" information.

What I was trying to say was that you can search for a person's "FIRST/LAST NAME" you can find out which domains they own. Even if it's whois private.

Yes, and I am telling you for the most part that is wrong. Domain Tools has no special access to registrar data so if a name is purchased with privacy then it will never be found with a first/last name search.

Yeah, actually you are right.

Sorry man, I didn't know what I was thinking.

You obviously had better breast milk than I did.

Again let me publically state that I was wrong.

Dullspace is the man.

Dullspace is the king. He will put your father in place.

He is the mack daddy and the all knower.

He would put Mohammaed and Jesus to shame. He is the almighty.

I am so sorry for trying to discredit him.

I again am ignorant and know nothing.

Sorry, again. I was wrong. Please forgive me.

DullSpace is the all knowing and almighty.
