White House planning new watchdog agency for internet privacy

It is expected to call for the industry to develop a so-called do-not-track tool that people could use to remove themselves from online surveillance by marketers and others.

LOL. Do not call/ do not mail, okay i understand. But tracking happens in real time.

Nonetheless they still do have a point in regards to consumer trust being essential for further growth of the interwebz as a medium for commerce. The old will die off, more savvy users growing up with technology will takeover households and be cautious as fuck for all those ringtone subscriptions they subscribed to.

bad idea. they will just want more money eventually and we don't need more nannies monitoring the interwebz.

I very much doubt this will come to much.

There are too many big corps who depend on behavioural advertising. They'll lobby the shit out of this.

It's more likely to happen in the EC because our culture is more privacy focussed. But even so - data protection laws over here are still gutless after 20 years. Google got a slap on the wrist for its latest breach.

Privacy crackdowns = Being made to sign a form saying "We know we raped the privacy of millions of people, but we promise not to do it again. Honest." Sarbanes Oxley this ain't.
