I'm looking to have a script written for an upcoming site. I checked out elance.com but it seems to be aimed towards the higher end of programming so to speak. Any others? Or perhaps some recommendations?

I have a coder I work with. If you like, send me a PM of your project description (if you don't want to make it public) and I can see if he's interested

I've herd horrorstories about rentacoder. You're better of with going with somebody reputable from the forums you frequent. Or somebody referred by a reputable source. The the post above :D .

I would use rentacoder.com for the grunt work, sitepoint or digitalpoint for any work related to seo or requiring strategic thinking.

sitepoint and digitalpoint both have forums for looking for services.

Yeah, but if you get a coder there you don't have anyone to moderate and watch your back. Rent a Coder is better in that they will watch out for you and step in if there is a problem.

Doesn't his reputation and prior trades provied some assurance to you?

That's usually how I find people to work with, I browse forums for people offering their services, look for people that have references and do a search in the forum for their past activity

After seeing this site's logo and some of the other work in the contests I think the next time I need design work done I'll host a SP contest.

I know dp has a rating system for each member (iTrader I think?) not sure if sitepoint does, other than being able to post and ruin reputations.

With any of the freelance sites, this is what I do and have had good luck with everyone I've used. Instead of opening up the bidding to all coders, search for projects similar to yours, that have been completed and the coder received high marks for it, and then invite that coder.

Invite as many coders as you can find that seem to have completed similar projects with good feedback.

Yeah, at Rent a Coder it does, but my point was at Sitepoint or Digital Point I have no idea about a coder's prior work or reputation. You could easily get screwed there. That is why I think someone looking for a coder would be better of going through a place like Rent a Coder.
