What's the purpose of subdomains?



LOL! Sorry i couldn't help it, this is hilarious...

Subdomains act the same as a new domain, except for the url. Meaning you can install a different wordpress installation on it, if that's what you were doing. So you could have:

bananas.fruitland.com
grapes.fruitland.com
etc...

each of these would be an independent site.

Wordpress pages are... how do I explain this any simpler? Pages.. They're just additional pages hosted on ONE website/wordpress installation. For example:

bananas.fruitland.com/how-to-pick-fruits
bananas.fruitland.com/which-bananas-are-good
bananas.fruitland.com/where-can-i-buy-bananas
etc...

asking whether wordpress pages could be a replacement for subdomains is like asking whether additional rooms in a house could be a replacement for buying a new one.

Personally I use subdomains if you make multilanguage website. Main domain is in English and fr.domain.com for Frech, etc.
 
Subdomains can also help you (and your server) deliver your files in a tidy and fast way.

scripts.site.com
