Subdomains act the same as a new domain, except for the url. Meaning you can install a different wordpress installation on it, if that's what you were doing. So you could have:
bananas.fruitland.com
grapes.fruitland.com
etc...
each of these would be an independent site.
Wordpress pages are... how do I explain this any simpler? Pages.. They're just additional pages hosted on ONE website/wordpress installation. For example:
bananas.fruitland.com/how-to-pick-fruits
bananas.fruitland.com/which-bananas-are-good
bananas.fruitland.com/where-can-i-buy-bananas
etc...
