Ramblings of an Old D.D.S.____..............(Door to Door Salesman)
My suggestion will sound a little off the wall, but if you think on it you will see how this applies to AM/IM and what we do.
Learn Statistical Analysis & Analysis Systems while at school. This will help you in EVERYTHING you do in this business. Tracking data and analyzing it is the core of what we do next to marketing.
So, I would suggest that you definitely should major in Marketing/Advertising and do your best to find a school that offers "Real world" classes that include Internet Marketing. You should then minor in Statistical Mathematics. Most schools now offer classes in programing and web design as well. So you should be able to take them along with your major & minor.
I never formally went to college. I took business classes through Embry Riddle while in the Marine Corps. back in the 1980's.
I took advertising in pain ole' High School and it taught the basic types of advertising campaigns that cater to the Human Buyer Motivators.
I was in outside sales for MANY years that covered everything from door to door sales & Business to Business as well as Direct Mail Marketing campaigns.
I'll tell you this much, my Direct Mail Marketing background has been one of my greatest assets in this business.
The principals of copy writing to get a prospect to take action through Direct Mail Response are almost identical to getting them to take action on the internet. I do more Internet Marketing than Affiliate Marketing.
So, you can study all the Direct Mail Response material out there and get a very good understanding of how to write copy that converts well on the internet.
As others have said, even if you were to just focus mainly on say a major of Advertising/Marketing and a minor in Statistical Analysis Systems you could learn PHP, Html, CSS, Java, and Database Management pretty much on your own if you wanted to.
Ok, I just read over this and it's a little loose and convoluted. Lulz
1.) General Business Classes- Teach you what you need to know to stay out of trouble with the Gov't. (Basically record keeping and some business law.)
2.) Advertising/Marketing- Teaches you most everything you need to know to get a product into the prospect's mind. (Everything from production to final product delivery. There is a LOT more to Marketing than what most people think/know.)
3.) Statistical Analysis Systems- Teaches you to monitor your efforts in business and to quantify the results of your actions. This enables you to spend both your efforts and money more wisely/efficiently in your business endeavors. (You learn systems to monitor conversions & your ROI of business activities.)
I will tell you one other "common" theme I found while in outside sales and talking to people who were really making money. Only about 10% of the thousands of successful men and woman I interacted with had a college education. Most of the successful business owners I met were self taught and all said, "You just have to take action and KEEP taking action. You will learn all you need to know as you go."
So, whether you decide to go to school or to strike straight out on your own, just keep moving forward and learn what you need to learn as the situations arise and you should be fine so long as you continue to TAKE ACTION and not stop/quit.
I wish you well on your journey.
