What Stats Do I Need to Be Looking At?

I have but only been working on high traffic driven sites and to be honest, I have gotten perplexed at the way awStats shows me results. My question is which stats am I to be concentrating on? Total Hits, Total Visitors or Unique Visitors?

uniques, generally. though they are all important, depending on what you're trying to analyze

I have found awstats to report different numbers of visits compared to Statcounter or Analytics.
AWS was reporting more traffic than the other two, that showed really similar numbers.

It was at least 1 year ago or more sot it might not be the case now.

Precisely. Im looking to get on with uniques. So, is AWStats reliable?

I'd always trust server side (Awstats) more than GA. Awstats can't lie. But there are various reasons that google analytics might not be accurate. People blocking JS, etc.
