HP officejet 4255 all in one has been fine apart from the odd paper jam, but considering I don't maintain it by perioidically cleaning the gears and rollers along the tape path, I'm not surprised. Ink is a bit expensive but overall it's been a reliable unit, like all my HP gear.
I have a HP LaserJet 6L from 1998 that still runs today. I shit you not. It just refuses to die.
I know what you're talking about with the ink drying up. I bought all new cartridges a while back (5 total), printed the approximately 2 pages I needed to print, then didn't need to print anything for a few months... and when I went to print, the ink cartridges were totally empty. I was... upset.
Basically ink expiration is a built-in date on which certain HP ink cartridges will stop working. Air ingestion and water evaporation can cause ink to change over time. In printing systems where the printhead and ink supply are separate, older ink can adversely impact the printhead and the ink delivery components within the printer. With ink expiration, however, HP can prevent this from happening.
I'd not want one of these for free. I actually got one free with a computer purchase, and it didn't last long.I doubt the ink actually dried up. They have chips now in the inkjet cartridges that tells the printer the cartridge is "expired" whether its full of ink or not, even if its never been used.

Have you ever seen an ink pen or marker with an expiration date on it?
I've got a HP 1020 Amazon.com: HP LaserJet 1020 Printer (Q5911A#ABA): Electronics that I've had since 2004. Just needs the occasional toner cartridge ($11 - 13)
