What Kind Of Software Do You Use To Make Beats?

I assume by 'controllers' you're talking about external musical keyboards. Can you still create beats in Reason without controllers? I.e., just using a laptop?

Yeah, by definition using them as controllers to tweak parts of the digital instruments, que samples, and manipulate your production is what I'm talking about. Changing the rate and amount of a synth's LSO can be keymapped to a knob or slider and can be changed in real-time. You can create music in these programs without external controllers and can use your computer keyboard to trigger notes, but these are the toys I never had.

This doesn't have any traditional piano keys, so the concept of an "external musical keyboard" only goes so far. Not to say I don't use and love my 49 keys(which have sliders, knobs, and pads too) but the controlling capabilities of the APC or any of the MPC line, MPC5000 *drooool* is far beyond what most external midi keyboard/controller combos can accomplish.

Fruity loops isn't really that bad. Its great for drums and for a sequencer for just starting out. Just don't use the FL sounds. I use a bunch of VST's from sampletank to native instruments. I use a roland drum machine, midi drum machine, midi keyboard, and motif x6. I mostly use Sony Acid Pro for the sequencer, hopefully ill get pro tools soon. For vocal recording I forget what specific kind of mic I have since I've had it for almost a year. Also use a behringer 21 channel mixer and an equalizer for fun.

I worked with someone at one of my old jobs that was basically running a professional studio as a producer/engineer and he helped out a lot. Try to get like a mentor, it helps.
