What is the best cheap affordable web hosting service?

Hostgator is not as good as it once was as mentioned above. On the shared level the servers are ok, but support is not that great.

I moved my reseller account to Hawkhost from after being on Hostgator forever and have been very pleased with their support. A few of my little issues were escolated to the CEO which kind of surprised me, but they did get solved fast :)

But honestly there are a lot of "ok" level shared hosting options. Forget about "unmlimted" resource plans, there is no such thing (read the ToS). Look for a company that has been around for a few years at least. Also search for reviews on web hosting talk. Web hosting talk has its detractors but it is about as clean as it get as far as webhosting reviews go.

And the final truth of web hosting is that you do not know if your hosting provider is good till you have a problem and they solve in a timely and professioal way.

DO NOT USE HAWKHOST !

Their servers couldnt reference the DNS from my registrar and they wouldnt admit it. Never accepted the blame even with evidence and were SMART ASSES in emails.

Every review you read on the Internet is a review that has been written by them, if you read enough you'll eventually find the same verbage across a few different sites.

Support sucks no one is ever in live chat.

Bastards...Every single one of them that work there...

DNS is set at my registrar (namecheap)and points to Hawkhost

Hawkhost couldnt find my sites on their servers, after my registrar points to them and says "Hey the website is here, on Hawkhost servers..."

Google ranking drops to oblivion.

It slipped my eyes for 6 month and always wondered what the hell was going on with my sites rankings, at that time i was making sites for lawyers and anyone whos ever tackled this market knows how cutthroat it can be, and how much you have to keep an eye on rankings on a daily basis. They caused me to lose about $30,000 and about 50k words typed by myself (very freaking time consuming).

Eventually, they said they knew of the problem and were working on it, but did not admit that i was directly affected. They said it was erratic and couldnt stop it from happening everytime (WTF?) . No word for two weeks, no word that the problem had ever been resolved. Then after i jump ship they try to auto bill my credit card 4 months later.

Guys are jerks, they forward emails to each other making smart ass comments about their customers , but then forget to remove the comments before they replied to me.

Bunch of ass clowns

Agreed. I have the same experience with hawk host.

I have similar settings and not using their default NS. Apparently they null routed the IP without informing everyone on that IP. They said they will not able to inform the IP change to customers (WTF?)

Bunch of jokers

Do you really want your website in the hands of Hawkhost clowns?

If you are looking for something cheap for year 1 then Dreamhost. You can get a free domain and "unlimited" hosting for a year for less than $20. After a year it jumps to $120 a year.

If you can't make money in a year then this gig aint for you.
