What is a Niche???

Sorry for the dumb question guys, but I am not familiar with the terminology. When all you guys are speaking of "niches" what do you mean?
Could you give examples?

Taking your example for "drawing"
I would assume "drawing on T-shirts" would be a niche.

What!?! I thought it was a French dessert! I am so confused.

A niche is simply a narrow field of interest. With websites, it's unlikely you will be able to beat expedia.com in the field of travel (for example), but you could probably dominate the niche of travelling with children in New Zealand much more easily.

Yes, drawing would be a niche (a rather general one)

And "Drawing on t-shirts" would be another niche, a somewhat smaller and more targetted niche in comparison to just "Drawing".

There's some sites that can help. I think (and keep in mind I'm pretty new), you want to find a topic people search for, but there's low Google search competition. Say, maybe when you type in your keyword in Google, there's in the range of 1,000,000 sites (competition) with the search and close to around 1,000 searches go to a site that will calculate that for you) on the topic. That may be pretty good numbers.

Even if you don't have a great niche, but have the contacts and are passionate, it could be worth the time. Searching can help you find variations of a nich. Here's one place that does it for free and calculates it, Nichbot.
 
Niches are all about targetting. Take one of my sites for example, which is just a fan / hobby site. Ferrari is a niche. Ferrari race cars would be a smaller more focused niche. Ferrari formula 1 cars would be even more focused and if you want to go even deeper you could go to Ferrari formula 1 cars from the turbo era etc, etc, etc
